Sven Ivan Selånger (actually Sven Eriksson ; born March 19, 1907 in Bergsåker , † November 9, 1992 in Sundsvall ) was a Swedish skier.

Career

Sven Eriksson took part in the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz , where he was sixth in Nordic combined , but only 31st in special jumping . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1931 he won bronze in ski jumping, at the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid in 1932 , he missed the podium twice in fourth in the special jumping and fifth in the Nordic combined. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Innsbruck in 1933 , he became world champion in combination and again won bronze in the special jump. His hometown Selånger was so impressed by this success that they allowed him to use the place name Selånger as his surname to better distinguish himself from the other many Erikssons in the area.

The following year Sven Selånger was again third in jumping at the 1934 World Championships in Sollefteå in front of a home crowd. At the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936 , he won silver in ski jumping. He was also registered for the first ever Alpine competitions, but did not start. In 1938 he was Swedish Champion in Slalom . In 1939 Sven Selånger became the first non-Norwegian to win the annual ski jumping at Holmenkollen . For this achievement he was honored with the Holmenkollen Medal (as the first non-Norwegian athlete) and the Svenska Dagbladet gold medal. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1941 , which had already been held during the Second World War , he won the bronze medal in ski jumping for the fourth time, but in 1946 the FIS declared this event to be invalid because many nations were unable to take part due to political circumstances.
