Arto Kasperi Tiainen (born September 5, 1930 in Savonlinna , † September 21, 1998 in Mikkeli ) was a Finnish cross-country skier .
Career
Tiainen, who started for Mikkelin Hiihtäjät , made his first international appearance at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo . There he finished 26th over 15 km. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1958 , he won the bronze medal with the relay. He also achieved 12th place over 15 km, fifth place over 30 km and fourth place over 50 km. The following year he won the Lahti Ski Games over 50 km and the Svenska Skidspelen over 30 km. In addition, he was second with the relay at the Svenska Skidspelen. and second over 15 km at the Lahti Ski Games. At the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley , he came in 18th place over 30 km. In March 1960, as in the previous year, he won the 50 km run at the Lahti Ski Games.
At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane in 1962 , Tiainen was fourth over 50 km. In early March 1963 he was second over 15 km at the Lahti Ski Games . In 1964 he won third place over 30 km at the Svenska Skidspelen . At the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1964 , he won the bronze medal over 50 km and the silver medal with the relay. He also came in 13th place over 15 km. In 1964 and 1965 he won the 50 km run at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival . For this he was awarded the Holmenkollen Medal in 1965. In the following year he won the silver medal over 50 km at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival and the World Championships in Oslo . In the following year he was second at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival in the 50 km run. In his last active season in 1968, he finished 16th over 30 km at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble . He completed his last race in March 1968 at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival over 50 km, which he finished in fourth place.
At Finnish championships Tiainen won four times over 50 km (1960, 1962, 1963, 1968), three times over 30 km (1960, 1961, 1963), three times with the relay (1957, 1962, 1965) and once over 15 km (1958) . During and after his cross-country skiing career, he worked as a police officer in Kuopio and Mikkeli . From 1968 to 1972 he was the national coach of the Finnish cross-country skiing team. He was also a member of the Finnish Parliament for two months in 1970 for the Social Democratic Party of Finland .
