Inger Bjørnbakken (born December 28, 1933 in Bærum ) is a former Norwegian ski racer . She became world champion in slalom in 1958 .

Career

Bjørnbakken was one of the most successful slalom runners in the second half of the 1950s. In 1955 she won the slalom for the first time at the Holmenkollen Kandahar races in Oslo . She was able to repeat this success over the next three years, also winning the combined in 1957 and the giant slalom and the downhill in 1959. In 1957 she won the slalom of the 17th Harriman Cup in Sun Valley . From 1956 to 1959 she was Norwegian champion seven times - three times in slalom, twice in giant slalom and once each in downhill and combined.

Bjørnbakken took part in the Winter Olympics twice. In 1956 she reached sixth place in slalom and 14th in giant slalom in Cortina d'Ampezzo , in 1960 she was 14th in slalom and 20th in giant slalom in Squaw Valley . In between was the greatest success of her career: At the 1958 World Championships in Bad Gastein , she won the gold medal in slalom with the fastest time in both rounds and an overall lead of 1.4 seconds over Austrian Josefa Frandl ; she was also tenth in the giant slalom. This makes her the only world champion in alpine skiing from Norway to date. For her world championship title, she was awarded the Holmenkollen Medal and the Morgenbladet Gold Medal together with Håkon Brusveen in the same year . Bjørnbakken also won Norway's Sportswoman of the Year . She is one of only nine non-Nordic skiers since 1895 to have received this honor.
