The Saalfeldnerin with 35 slalom victories in this discipline one of the most successful skiers of the World Cup credit history. She is two-time world champion and won five discipline ratings. There are also several other silver and bronze medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships. Her younger sister Bernadette is also a ski racer, her older brother Josef was a member of the ÖSV team from 1998 to 2005.

Career

Marlies Schild competed in her first race at the age of six. At the age of ten she was accepted into the Salzburg school cadre, after elementary school she attended the alpine branch of the secondary school in Zell am See . After passing the entrance exam, she switched to the ski school in Stams . In 1998 she finally succeeded in joining the ÖSV youth team. Schild worked his way into the World Cup via FIS and European Cup races . From 2002 she was part of the ÖSV squad .

At the beginning of her career, she preferred downhill races . By the age of 19, however, she had already had five knee operations and torn cruciate ligaments and then concentrated on the less dangerous disciplines of giant slalom and slalom . At times she competed in all disciplines in the World Cup. Her favorite discipline was slalom, but she also won a World Cup in giant slalom and super combined , as well as second places in downhill and super-G.

In their first appearance at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002, Schild was eliminated in the first round of the slalom. She won the slalom silver medal at the 2003 World Championships in St. Moritz and the bronze medal in Alpine Combined at the 2005 World Championships in Santa Caterina .

At the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin , Schild won the combined silver medal and a few days later the bronze slalom medal. She was also able to expand her collection of medals at the 2007 World Championships in Åre . Together with Benjamin Raich , Renate Götschl , Fritz Strobl , Mario Matt and Michaela Kirchgasser , Schild won the gold medal in the team competition . In the individual races, she won the silver medal in the slalom and the bronze medal in the super combination.

In the 2003/04 and 2005/06 seasons , Schild was second in the slalom ranking of the World Cup. For her achievements, Marlies Schild was voted second place behind her team colleague Michaela Dorfmeister (double Olympic champion in Turin) in the 2006 election for Austria's sportswoman of the year .

In the 2006/07 season she won a total of eight World Cup races (including seven of nine slaloms and one super combination) and received her first two crystal balls for winning the Slalom World Cup and the Combination World Cup. In the overall World Cup of the 2006/07 season, she finished second behind her teammate Nicole Hosp ; At the World Cup final in Lenzerheide she led the overall standings two races before the end after impressive results in the speed competitions (2nd place in the downhill, 3rd place in the Super-G), but had to give up the lead after a failed slalom and she could not win back in the final giant slalom, which Nicole Hosp won as well as the slalom. In the 2007/08 season , Schild won five slaloms and was able to win the Slalom World Cup again. She achieved many of her victories by a large margin.

On October 9, 2008, she came in giant slalom training on the Rettenbach hard to fall and retreated while a comminuted fracture in the tibia and fibula as well as a fracture of the tibial plateau in the left leg. Because of this, she could not contest races in the entire 2008/09 season . On her comeback in Levi, Finland on November 14th, 2009 she finished 6th in slalom. A few weeks later, on December 29, 2009 in Lienz, Austria, she celebrated her first victory in slalom after her serious injury. From then on, she stood on the podium at every FIS slalom in which she crossed the finish line for over 2 years, including at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , where she won the silver medal, and at the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , where she became world champion in slalom and also won the silver medal in the team competition. This series ended on March 10, 2012 with a 6th place in the Aare slalom. Marlies Schild has not started in the downhill and super-G disciplines since her accident.

In the 2010/11 World Cup season , she won six out of nine slalom races, and was eliminated from two more. Only at the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide , before which she was crowned Slalom World Cup winner for the third time, she had to admit defeat to Tina Maze and came second. In the 2011/12 season , Marlies Schild won the first five slalom competitions in a sometimes superior manner. After a failure in Kranjska Gora, she also won the slalom in Soldeu . With a third place in the eighth of the ten races of the season in Ofterschwang , she won the Slalom World Cup for the fourth time. In 2012 she was voted Austria's Sportswoman of the Year .

On December 20, 2012, Schild tore an inner ligament in his right knee after falling during slalom training in Åre, Sweden , and had to undergo an operation. The healing went faster than expected and Schild was back on skis two months after her accident. On February 16, 2013 she took part in the slalom of the World Championships in Schladming and finished in 9th place. Due to repeated knee problems, she did not participate in further races this season.

On November 16, 2013, Schild started again in the World Cup at the slalom in Levi. On December 17 of the same year, she set the record for Swiss ski racer Vreni Schneider with her 34th slalom career success in Courchevel ; at the same time she replaced Tanja Poutiainen as the oldest slalom world cup winner. On December 29, 2013, in Lienz, with her 35th slalom victory, she became the sole record holder in this discipline. On December 29, 2018, her record was surpassed by Mikaela Shiffrin .

On February 21, 2014, Schild took 2nd place in the slalom at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi and was thus able to secure the silver medal again after Vancouver 2010 .
She ended her active career in September 2014.
