Àlleghe ( Ladin Àlie ) is a municipality with 1166 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian province of Belluno , Veneto region , southwest of Cortina d'Ampezzo . The name Alleghe is derived from the Latin alica (from alicarius = barn).

Alleghe with a lake

geography

The village is located in the Dolomite Cordevole on the same lake south of the Marmolada ( Ladin : Marmolada ) northwest of the Civetta (Ladin: Cuita ). The lake was created on January 11, 1771 by a landslide on the nearby Monte Forca ( 2356  m slm ; formerly called Monte Piz ). He buried the towns of Marin, Riete and Fusine under himself, with the broken rubble damming the watercourse, which in just a few days reached a depth of 18 meters and a length of 1500 m. Other places (Sommariva, Torre, Costa and Peron) were flooded. The slightly higher located town of Alleghe (today eponymous for the community) was spared.

history

A settlement with a chapel already existed in the 12th century, it is mentioned in a papal bull from 1185. Before the landslide, the population settled in scattered villages in the valley floor and on the side slopes of the torrent. After the landslide, the following places remained in addition to Alleghe, which are now districts of the municipality:

  • Fontanive
  • Coldemies
  • Casaril
  • Cordella ( Ladin : Cordela )
  • Frena
  • Pradel di sotto
  • Pradel di sopra Pinié
  • Coi
  • Perencina
  • Col de Fontana
  • Fernazza
  • Scalon
  • Masarè
  • La Sala
  • Tos
  • Pian
  • Lagusel
  • Caprile ( Ladin : Ciauri ), a nucleus of the Cordevole Valley and, next to Alleghe, the most important district of today's municipality.

Attractions

  • The church of San Biagio was reconstructed after the landslide in 1771. The submerged Gothic precursor (consecrated in 1466) was in turn built on the remains of the chapel mentioned in the papal bull of 1185. The interior is decorated with Baroque paintings and frescoes by Valentino Rovisi (1715–1783, from Moena , Tiepolo School). The main altarpiece shows the patron saint Blasius with the saints Maria Magdalena and Johannes Nepomuk , a ceiling fresco depicts the judgment of Solomon .
  • In the town hall there is an arazzo ( tapestry-like picture ) by the history painter Kurt Geibel-Hellmeck ( Füssen , 1911–2005) depicting a meeting between a government delegation of the Republic of Venice and the guilds of Alleghe in 1571.
  • The parish church in the district of Caprile (S. Bartolomeo) dates from the 15th century. It contains paintings by Karl Henrici ( Schweidnitz , 1737–1823) and an organ from 1660.

In terms of art history, points of contact with the German cultural area are documented.

tourism

Lago di Alleghe, north side (Piz Guda, 2150  m slm ); still half frozen in March 2008

The first hotels were built in Caprile in the 19th century. For mountain hikers there were the first huts in the area of the Marmolada and the Civetta. With lifts and hiking trails in the Civetta, the Rifugio Sonino al Coldài , Rifugio Tissi , Rifugio Torrani and Rifugio Mario Vazzoler are popular excursion destinations.

The lake is used by anglers and water sports enthusiasts for pedal boating, canoeing, windsurfing and sailing. In winter, people go ice-skating on the frozen water.

The importance of Alleghe as a winter sports resort began in the 1980s when the municipality merged with the neighboring municipalities of Selva di Cadore , Palafavera and Zoldo Alto in the Comprensorio Sciistico del Civetta , which led to the expansion of a slope length of over 30 km with 25 lifts. This area has been part of the Dolomiti Superski initiative since 1993/94 .

A number of hotels and holiday apartments are available in Alleghe and Caprile.

literature

A series of murders that occurred in the area between 1933 and 1946 inspired the writer Sergio Saviane (1923-2001, from Castelfranco Veneto ) to write his crime novel I misteri di Alleghe (The Secrets of Alleghe) in 1952 , which was first published in the Il Lavoro Illustrato magazine and published as a book in 1964.

ice Hockey

With HC Alleghe (founded in 1933), the municipality has an ice hockey team of supraregional importance.
