The Rifugio Maria Vittoria Torrani ( Rifugio Torrani for short ) is a refuge of the CAI - Section Conegliano on the Civetta in the Belluno Dolomites . It is one of the highest huts in the Dolomites.

Location and surroundings

The Rifugio Torrani is located at 2984  m slm like an eagle's nest in the eastern slopes of the Civetta . The main summit is only 236 meters from the hut. The building sits enthroned on a narrow band of rubble that divides the eastern flank of the mountain in two halves, in the municipality of Val di Zoldo . The next bases are the Rifugio Coldài ( 2132  m ) in the north and the Rifugio Vazzoler ( 1714  m ) in the south.

history

The hut was built between 1935 and 1938 on the initiative of the CAI Conegliano section . The Torrani and Vazzoler families made a decisive financial contribution, the construction was carried out under Attilio Tissi. The inauguration took place on August 7, 1938. In November 1966, the hut was partially destroyed by a storm and had to be extensively repaired in the summer of the following year. The first renovation began in 1973 and reopened in 1976. A material ropeway has been leading directly to the hut since 1978 , which was renovated again in 1991.

The Rifugio owes its name to the Milanese mountaineer Maria Vittoria Torrani, who was fatally buried by an avalanche on January 6, 1935 with three companions while climbing the Piz Corvatsch .
