Arsiè is a municipality with 2237 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian province of Belluno . It belongs to the Feltre mountain community .

location

The village is located at an important traffic junction: via the municipality, the route leads north to the Suganertal , in Trentino , and south to the industrial area of Bassano.

The most important cities in the near and far are Feltre (15 km), Bassano del Grappa (35 km), Belluno (45 km), Trento (70 km), Padua (80 km).

Arsiè extends over a very extensive area, between 300 and 1500 meters above sea level. In the south, the municipality is surrounded by a reservoir that arose from the waters of the Cismon, a tributary of the Brenta. The lake was created as an artificial basin for a hydropower plant and is also called Corlo Lake, lago di Corlo, after the village district of the same name. The Monte Grappa mountain range begins south of Arsiè . In the north rise the mountain landscapes of the Col Perer and Cima Campo, which lie directly on the border with Trentino. To the west, in the district of Incino, it goes to Cismon del Grappa, in the province of Vicenza. In the east, the Cismon separates Arsiè from the neighboring municipality of Fonzaso.

Arsiè is divided into the following districts (frazioni): Mellame, Rivai, Novegno, Rocca, Incino, Fastro and S. Vito.

Population and economy

After the First World War, the municipality with its 8,000 inhabitants was the most populated town in the province of Belluno, after the capital Belluno and Feltre. After the Second World War there were still over 6,000. Since then, thousands have emigrated from this area, which is characterized by agriculture and cattle breeding, also abroad. Recently, tourism is hoped for an economic boom. The lake, but primarily the intact mountain landscape and some monuments from the First World War are the most important attractions.

The forts from the First World War

The remains of the fortress of Cima Lan can still be found near Col Perer. There are also ruins of military installations, barracks and officers' houses throughout the area.

On Cima Campo, at an altitude of 1,472 meters, is the Forte Leone, literally the lion fortress. The very extensive complex is currently being restored, also with funds from Austria, and will later house a museum. Built from 1906 to 1912, it was the most modern Italian festival on the border with Austria-Hungary. In 1917 the fortress was conquered by the Meraner Standschützen. The fortress had already been largely disarmed by the Italians because the guns were needed on other fronts: instead, black-lacquered fir trees were inserted into the notches to deceive the enemy. A few days after the capture, the fort was personally visited by Emperor Charles I.

Churches

Although Arsiè is in the province of Belluno, the community does not belong to the diocese of Feltre-Belluno, but to the diocese of Padua.

The parish church was built in the 9th century. It is dedicated to Saint Mary. The church in the district of Rivai is dedicated to John the Baptist, that of Mellame to Saint Martin. The church tower was rebuilt in 1926. The St. Cassian Church of Rocca was flooded by the reservoir. There is also a church in San Vito and Incino, and in Fastro, where it is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. There are other small churches and numerous chapels.
