Population development

history

The beginnings of the settlement history are in the dark. It is possible that a Longobard settlement already existed , which also included the upper valley of the Avisio and the Fodom . From the High Middle Ages to the late 14th century, Rocca Pietore belonged to Tyrol and the diocese of Brixen. In 1395 it became dependent on the city of Belluno and thus belonged to the Republic of Venice , although it retained extensive autonomy shaped by the Ladin culture, which was enshrined in 1417 with the statutes of the Magnifica Comunità Rocca .

After the Napoleonic conquest of the Republic of Venice in 1806 and the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Rocca Pietore fell to Austria and in 1866 back to Italy.

Since the mid-1960s, the municipality has increasingly opened up to tourism with the construction of the cable cars to the Marmolada . It is part of the Dolomiti Superski initiative . Another tourist attraction is the Serrai Gorge in the Sottoguda district.

The Serrai Gorge from Sottoguda

Serrai Gorge from Sottoguda

The Serrai Gorge of Sottoguda is an approx. 2 kilometer long gorge with about 50 meter high walls between Sottoguda and Malga Ciapela. The Pettorina torrent flows through the gorge, which is only 8 to 10 m wide. The gorge can be walked on or traversed by a tourist train.

At the beginning of the gorge coming from the east there are two rock caverns on the left. They were set up by the KuK army as explosive chambers during the First World War to prevent the gorge from passing through.

There are numerous Ladin Dolomite legends surrounding the gorge, such as that of the Shadow King (Ré Ombro), who lived in an alabaster castle in the area and whose beautiful daughter Ombretta was supposed to marry a prince. Then the envious stepmother turned the king's daughter into a stone with the help of a witch on her wedding day.

The blacksmith's trade

The districts of Pian and Sottoguda are internationally known for their blacksmithing. In the main street of Sottoguda there is one handicraft workshop after the other with numerous wrought-iron everyday objects and sculptures.
