Canale d'Agordo (until 1964 Forno di Canale ; Ladin Canal , German : Augartnerkanal ) is a municipality in the Italian Dolomites in the province of Belluno . It is located in the valley of the Cordevole , the so-called Agordino .
history
The first sources about the existence are in a document (Bull of Pope Lucius III. ) From 1185, where the place is mentioned together with the old church of St. Simon Vallada, later also called San Simon Canale. At the beginning of the 14th century, the quarries were exploited and mining was carried out, especially the extraction of iron, lead and mercury. Sass Negher and Sais, mountains in the Val Gares, became another mining area next to Agordo. In the iron foundries and forges there, weapons were made during the Venetian rule . In the 19th century, alpine tourism began in the village with the construction of the first hotel, the "Al Gallo" in Val Biois, which was to serve as accommodation for hikers on the route to Pale di San Martino and the Comelle plateau .
Attractions
A sculpture of John the Baptist from the 13th / 14th centuries is worth seeing in Canale d'Agordo . Century in the parish church. In addition, there are the old haylofts ( Tabiai in Ladin ) that can be found everywhere.
Culture
The Union Ladina Val Biois and the Gruppo Folk Val Biois are active in the Biois Valley, promoting the Ladin language and culture. Law 482/1999 recognized the Agordino municipalities as an area with a Ladin minority. The typical Ladin carnival ( la Zinghenesta ) also takes place at the beginning of March .
In addition, the Tyrolean influence can also be felt, as the valley borders on historic Tyrol and was part of Austria for a while.
