It has been an important summer and winter holiday destination in the Dolomites since the middle of the 20th century .

Law 482/1999 recognized the Agordino municipalities as an area with a Ladin minority.

location

Falcade is located in the valley of the Bióis , a tributary of the Cordevole , between the rocky mountain ranges of the Marmolada in the north and the Pale di San Martino in the south. To the east at the mouth of the valley at Cencenighe Agordino is the Civetta , which can also be seen from Falcade. West it goes up to the Passo di San Pellegrino , where the torrent rises and the border to Trentino and the transition to Val di Fassa is.

The neighboring municipalities are Canale d'Agordo , Moena , Rocca Pietore , Soraga and Primiero San Martino di Castrozza .

Attractions

Santa Maria Immacolata Church, 1947
  • The late 15th century Gothic church of SS Fabiano e Sebastiano with a tower from 1884 contains a wooden crucifix by Giovanni Marchiori and a Baroque altar painting attributed to the Tiepolo student Valentino Rovisi ( Moena , 1715–1783).
  • The painter and sculptor Augusto Murer (1922–1985) came from the village . A museum has now been set up in his former studio.
  • Around Falcade in the Bióis valley, over 300 historic barns with hay floors (Ladin: tabiài) have been preserved. The oldest date from the 17th century, the younger from the 1950s.
  • The conspicuous new parish church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary was started in 1933/1934 and completed in 1947. The architect was Achille Vettorazzo , who built a similar church in Marcon . The oversized building stands on a former military cemetery that had to be relocated and of which a small chapel remains.

Culture

The residents are deeply rooted in the Ladin culture. The headquarters of the Union Ladina Val Biois and the Gruppo Folk Val Biois are located in Falcade .

In addition, there is a noticeable Tyrolean influence, as the municipality borders directly on historic Tyrol and for a while also belonged to Austria.

Every year at the end of September the cattle drive (la Desmonteda) is celebrated with a traditional festival.

Tourist infrastructure and sports

In summer, hikers and mountain bikers will find an extensive network of trails, cable cars and chair lifts, for example to the Le Buse alpine pasture area (1,885 m) and on to Laresei (2,168 m).

In winter the valley of the Bióis is suitable for cross-country skiing. Approx. 10 km of trails have been developed and there is a school for Sci Nordico . For downhill skiers, Falcade is combined with the Passo di San Pellegrino and the area around Moena to form the Trevalli ski area with approx. 100 km of slopes, which in turn is part of the Dolomiti Superski initiative .

A number of accommodation facilities and holiday apartments are available.
