Vallada Agordina

Vallada Agordina ( La Valada in Ladin ) is a municipality ( comune ) with 485 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Belluno in the Italian region of Veneto . Vallada Agordina consists of the villages of Mas, Celat, Sachet, Andrich, Toffol ( Ladin Tofol ) , Piaz and Cogul and is located in the valley of the Bióis River on the Strada provinciale (provincial road) SP346, about 110 km northwest of Venice , 35 km northwest of Belluno and 40 km southeast of Bolzano.

Law 482/1999 recognized the Agordino municipalities as an area with a Ladin minority.

The population has been decreasing steadily since the 1920s and stood at 515 in December 2010. In contrast to the neighboring communities and villages, tourism only plays a very subordinate role, although the good transport links (Dolomiti bus) provide direct access to the neighboring ski sports areas.

San Simon Church

Vallada Agordina gains some importance through its history and architecture. The community is shaped by its Ladin culture and traditions. The numerous old hay barns ( Ladin: tabiai ) are characteristic. In addition to preserved residential houses from the 17th century, there are a number of churches:

  • San Simon, as the most important building. San Simon was built on the site of a simple 8th century chapel. A church was mentioned at this point as early as 1185. The church was frescoed by Paris Bordone , probably in 1549 .
  • San Rocco (Celat)
  • Sacro Cuore (sachet)
  • San Giuseppe (Andrich)
  • Santa Lucia (Cogul)
  • San Antonio Abate (Mas)

Culture

The Union Ladina Val Biois and the Gruppo Folk Val Biois are active in Val Biois and are committed to preserving the Ladin language and culture. In addition, the Tyrolean influence is noticeable, as the whole valley borders directly on historic Tyrol and was part of Austria for a while.

The residents of Vallada were once known in the area for the manufacture of wooden shoes ( Ladin : dambre ). There is also a song from Vallada that tells of this activity: " Chi da la Valada co le dambre coi rampogn ... ".
