The Monte Grappa is 1775 m slm the highest elevation of Grappa Stocks , the southernmost group of Dolomite .
This is an advanced mountain range between the rivers Brenta and Piave . To the south at its foot lies the town of Bassano del Grappa . From there a well-developed road leads 30 km to the summit.
In the 1930s , the fascists erected an unmistakable monumental memorial and ossuary on the summit for those who died there in the First World War . In the three battles of the Piave , thousands of soldiers were killed on Monte Grappa and the surrounding mountains. 12,615 Italian and 10,295 Austrian soldiers rest on Monte Grappa. In order not to disturb the peace and quiet of the dead, the summit region may only be entered on foot, cyclists and motorists are not allowed to enter.
Among the paragliders , Monte Grappa is an ideal starting point for cross-country flying or just for long glides. The starting point at the summit is colloquially known as “ Panettone ” (because of the shape of the monument) .
The Italian writing instrument manufacturer Montegrappa was named after the mountain.
