Montegrappa is an Italian writing instrument manufacturer that also sells jewelry such as watches and cufflinks . The manufacturer is known for its high-priced pens.

history

Montegrappa is considered the oldest writing instrument manufacturer in Italy. The company was founded in Bassano del Grappa in 1912 by the Austrian entrepreneurs Edwige Hoffman and Heidrich Helm. The city lies at the foot of the Monte Grappa mountain after which the manufacturer was named. During the First World War , the units of the Italian armed forces were equipped with fountain pens from the Montegrappa brand Elmo . This order made the manufacturer a mass producer of writing implements. It is said that the writers Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos used these pens to record their observations about the war. Hemingway is said to have written the reports of the wounded for the novel A Farewell to Arms (Eng. " In another country ") with an Elmo pen. This is very possible because both writers served as volunteers in the war and the Elmo fountain pen was a widely used mass product. In retrospect, however, it is hardly possible to prove which documents were actually written by the writers mentioned with pens from this manufacturer.

Nowadays the manufacturer only produces in the high price segment. The brand was owned by the Swiss group Richemont until 2009 . Until then, a large part of the writing instruments were produced by Montblanc in Hamburg .
