Stilwerk
stilwerk is a name and a brand under which a group of companies and commitments in the field of design-related living and furnishing, or interior and furniture design is operated. The core of the activities is the operation of the stilwerk design center. All companies involved belong to the Garbe Group , founded in 1965 by Bernhard Garbe.
The term “stilwerk”, companies and activities
The term, originally coined as the name of a usage concept for a protected industrial monument, today stands for a multitude of activities: themed department stores with events, publications, design awards, a platform and blog, as well as the marketing of residential real estate. The name is also a trademark registered for the GmbH of the same name since 2013. The group of companies includes a. stilwerk GmbH, its subsidiaries stilwerk Center Management GmbH, stilwerk room Service GmbH and Stilwerk WeKu Verwaltungs UG (limited liability), Garbe Living Hamburg Development GmbH (formerly: stilwerk living Hamburg Development GmbH), 1st RED Office Properties GmbH (formerly stilwerk Office Properties GmbH) . The interdependence of the companies and ownership of the real estate has not been publicly clarified.

The houses combine independent shops under one roof and promote exhibitions and events on the subject of architecture and design . The concept also includes publications and own events. In 2001 it received the Forum Prize of the TextilWirtschaft. Several companies were founded for the different tasks, see above. The houses are probably not all owned by the Garbe Group, some of them are only managed by stilwerk.
The first house under the name “stilwerk” was opened in 1996 in a former malt house near the fish auction hall in Hamburg. Further stores were later opened in Berlin (opening year: 1999), Düsseldorf (2000), Vienna (2010) and Dortmund (2015).
Hamburg
The malt house was built in 1907 as one of the first reinforced concrete skeleton structures in Germany with the brick facade typical of that time . The facade, decorated with blind arches and decorative ribbons, testifies to the economic prosperity of the time. As one of the city's last industrial monuments, the building has been a listed building since 1994 . It was bought by the Garbe Group and extensively rebuilt and refurbished for conversion. The stilwerk concept was originally developed as a usage concept and thus for the preservation of the vacant Naefeke malt house. With a sales area of around 11,000 m², the stilwerk Hamburg at the Altonaer Fischmarkt is one of the larger shopping centers in the city and unites a total of 28 shops under one roof.
Berlin
In November 1999, another stilwerk furniture store was opened near Savignyplatz in Berlin. The new building was planned by the architects Novotny Mähner Assoziierte and Studio und Partners . With a sales area of 20,000 m² on four floors, the stilwerk forum for lectures and exhibitions and a large roof terrace, stilwerk Berlin is the largest house of the stilwerk umbrella brand. A total of 59 shops in the design and furnishing sector offer their goods.

Dusseldorf
In 2000 the third stilwerk store near Königsallee with a sales area of 17,000 m² was opened in Düsseldorf. A special feature of the building is a built-in sliding roof . The interior of the building is designed as an elliptical atrium with surrounding galleries on the five sales floors. The architects' office JSK took over the architectural conception . In 2000 the architects received an award from the Association of German Architects in Düsseldorf for the stilwerk, the “House with Heaven” .
Stuttgart (former)
The Königsbau Passagen in Stuttgart appeared under the name stilwerk from the opening in 2006. After Stilwerk ended marketing the center in 2009, the operator finally parted with the stilwerk brand name in March 2014.
Vienna (former)
Vienna was the first international location of the stilwerk furniture stores. The shopping center in downtown Vienna comprised 28 shops with an area of 6000 m² on several floors. The stilwerk Vienna was opened in 2010 in the Nouvel Tower designed by Jean Nouvel . The different colored and cut glasses of the facades, depending on the direction of the compass, were striking and changed their appearance depending on the course of the day. A feature at stilwerk Vienna was the “Green Wall” - a vertical construction made of plants by the French Patrick Blanc . On a free-standing steel structure of around 600 m² in the courtyard, around 20,000 different plants were supplied with a permanent irrigation system from a well and formed a vertical garden. The stilwerk Vienna was closed in 2017.
Dortmund (former)
The stilwerk Dortmund was opened in October 2015. The sales area was around 8000 m². Unlike the other Stilwerke, the Dortmund house was not in the city center, but in front of the city gates on the B1 and directly in front of the Westfalenhallen . Since 2017, the building has been in-house again, as it was before the opening.
Publications and events
Stilwerk magazine
The Stilwerk magazine has been published four times a year since October 2013. It is a joint production with Ringdrei Media Network Hamburg and appears for each of the currently four locations in a regionalized version with a circulation of 15,000 copies. It comprises around 100 pages and is sold through bookshops in addition to its own branches. From May 1997 to August 1998 a Stilwerk magazine was published as a supplement to the designreport .
Design Diary blog
Since the late summer of 2012, the stilwerk Design Diary blog has been operating on the topics of furnishings, design and lifestyle. Authors (including trend researchers, designers, interior and lifestyle journalists) write about news and impressions about trends, products, trade fairs and designers.
Events
Examples of events include a .: the trend researcher Peter Wippermann gave several lectures on his trend studies, for example in 2009 on the subject of “How will we live tomorrow” at the stilwerk Hamburg. In cooperation with A&W Architektur & Wohnen , the Stilwerk is showing the traveling exhibition “A&W Designer of the Year” in spring 2014 in the stilwerk stores in Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Berlin, from which the A&W mentor award for young talents also emerges.

stilwerk limited edition design gallery
The gallery has been in operation in the Hamburg headquarters since May 2010 and also takes part in international design events and trade fairs. It has set itself the goal of exhibiting “contemporary products that move at the interface between art and design”.
Raymond Loewy Foundation
In 2013, British American Tobacco Germany handed over the management of the Raymond Loewy Foundation to Stilwerk GmbH. Founded in 1991, it is one of the most important design institutions in Germany. With the Lucky Strike Junior Design Award, the foundation supports young designers and their training and thus contributes to increasing performance and quality at German design universities. Internationally successful designers have been honored with the Lucky Strike Designer Award every year since 1991 for their life's work or a special creative period .
Recycling design award
Since 2009, selected works from the Recycling Design Prize have also been exhibited in the Stilwerk design centers in Hamburg, Berlin, Düsseldorf and Vienna.
