A&W Architektur & Wohnen is a magazine for living, architecture , gardens, design and style from Germany. The magazine has been published independently by the Hamburg Jahreszeiten Verlag since 1968 .

history

In 1968 the magazine was called Architektur und Kultivierter Wohnen , a year later it was named Architektur & Wohnen . It emerged from the magazine Film und Frau , which published its first special issue Architecture in 1957. From 1960 to 1966, two special issues were published annually. The frequency of publication increased over the years until the magazine had been published every two months since 1985. This publication is still relevant.

Every two months, Architektur & Wohnen presents - in addition to international houses and apartments as well as gardens and parks - designers and architects in portraits, accompanied by photo series. Many reports are produced by photographers and authors. In 1999 it received the prestigious Lead Award from the Academy of Visual Language and has received several DDC Awards and nominated for the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany (now the German Design Award). The magazine received the German Design Award 2013 from the German Design Council in the “Communication Tools” category for the “Designer of the Year” design award.

Awards

Since 1997 the magazine has been awarding the international “Designer of the Year” award and the associated mentor award for young talents. In addition to the recognition in the first edition of each year, there is also an exhibition of the award winners. The first designer of the year was the Italian industrial designer Achille Castiglioni , who suggested Konstantin Grcic for the mentor award. Ten years later, Grcic was named A&W Designer of the Year himself. Other winners (selection): Philippe Starck , Antonio Citterio , Alfredo Häberli , Tokujin Yoshioka , Patricia Urquiola and Werner Aisslinger (2014) The “Architect of the Year 2013” winners are the brothers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec . The Bouroullecs in turn nominated the product designer Miguel Vieira Baptista for the mentor award. and Werner Aisslinger (2014).

On May 10, 2012 in Hamburg, the magazine awarded the “Architect of the Year” prize for the first time. Architektur & Wohnen nominated three architects' offices in advance and had the magazine's readers and online users vote. The Rotterdam architectural firm MVRDV emerged as the winner. MVRDV in turn nominated landscape architect Anouk Vogel for the USM mentor award for architecture by A&W, which is part of the award .
