Patricia Urquiola (* 1961 in Oviedo , Spain ) is a Spanish architect and designer .

Life

Patricia Urquiola was born in Oviedo, Spain in 1961. First she completed an architecture degree in 1979 at the Faculdad de Arquitectura de Madrid with the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza and the famous Italian designer Achille Castiglioni . Immediately afterwards she studied at the Polytechnic in Milan and did her doctorate there in 1989 with Castiglioni. Between 1990 and 1992 Urquiola worked at the College of Industrial Design in Paris as an assistant teacher for Castiglioni and Bettinelli. In 1991 she designed her first piece of furniture and was in charge of product development at De Padova until 1996. From 1993 to 1996, the interior designer specialized in showrooms and restaurants. During this time she worked with the architects Marzia de Renzio and Emanuela Ramerino. In 1996 she became the head of the Lissoni Associati designer group.

In 2001 Urquiola founded her studio "Studio Urquiola". Today Patricia Urquiola works for well-known companies such as B&B Italia, Driade, Molteni, Moroso, Hansgrohe / Axor. In 2011, the Spanish company Gandia Blasco had its Manga (sleeves) knitwear manufactured in India . In 2015 the traditional company appointed Cassina Urquiola as Art Director.

Works

Patricia Urquiola mainly designs furniture, but lamps and carpets can also be found among her designs. Her "Antibodi" lounger, which she designed for Moroso, is very well known. But her "Smock" armchair is also very well known. The "Caboche" lamp, which she designed for the Foscarini company, is also a successful product. Awards

Patricia Urquiola has been voted designer of the year several times. She was awarded z. B. 2003 from the international magazine "ELLE Deco" and 2006 from "Wallpaper Magazine". In 2008 she was chosen designer of the year in the section "Now! Design à vivre" at the Paris design fair "Maison & objet". A&W Architektur & Wohnen recognized her as "A&W Designer of the Year 2012".

But not only she herself has received numerous awards, especially her products have received multiple awards. Both "Antibodi" and the "Crochet" carpet designed for Paola Lenti received an "International Design Award" from ELLE Deco.
