education

Germany

Compared to training as a media designer , a design course is usually more conceptually oriented. In Germany, the course usually takes place at universities of applied sciences . In the meantime, design courses in Germany are increasingly being completed with a Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts , where the title of Diplom-Designer was previously awarded.

Design courses at public and private art colleges and academies usually pursue a stronger artistic-scientific approach than those at technical colleges. Following the program of the former Ulm School of Design (1953–1968), universities were created that focused on design and interdisciplinary principles for architects, artists and designers. Some of the training centers are now called universities (e.g. UdK Berlin and Bauhaus University Weimar ) due to the wide range .

The state-recognized apprenticeship as technical product designer has existed since 2005 . In view of the fact that the term designer (without a diploma ), unlike architects in Germany, otherwise enjoys no protection, there are also numerous professions that use it. As a rule, there are significant differences in the tasks and the methodology: for example as a designation for technical draftsmen or in the craft . For example, some chambers of skilled trades offer a course to become a designer in the trades at their workshops . The target group are journeymen and graduates from arts and crafts professions. For admission to the design course at work academies, at least one recognized professional training and often several years of professional experience are required. There is also the possibility of a four-semester advanced training course at a technical school to become a state-certified designer .

Academic degrees such as Diplom-Designer , Diplom-Gestalter and Master of Arts are protected in Germany and may only be used by graduates of corresponding courses at universities.
