Technical draftsman is a job title and the designation for an apprenticeship in Austria. It must not be confused with the draftsman's profession . In Germany, the training occupation existed until July 30, 2011. Since August 1, 2011 the training occupations of technical system planner and technical product designer have replaced the old training. In Switzerland, the professional title of the technical draftsman is a designer or electrical planner . The main task of draftsmen is to create technical drawings that conform to standards .

Training in Austria

In Austria, technical draughtsmen complete a three and a half year apprenticeship in the form of a dual training . Apprentices are trained at the vocational school and in training companies. The main focus of the training is on the creation of detailed and standardized technical drawings and plans. The basis for this is formed by concepts, ideas and factory sketches that come from architects, engineers or designers. You will learn to draw primarily with computer-aided drawing and construction programs ( computer-aided design , CAD systems).

The training ends with the final apprenticeship examination. Related apprenticeships, such as B. A structural draftsman or designer can be completed with a shortened apprenticeship period. Passing the final apprenticeship examination in Austria also enables access to the vocational baccalaureate and subsequently to further higher qualifications at colleges or universities.

Reorganization of training in Germany

With the new training regulations from August 1, 2011, the training occupation of technical draftsman was replaced by the technical system planner or technical product designer . Both professions are linked to one another through joint training content of one year.

The reorganization of the job descriptions also results in a change in the previous job title of technical draftsman. There are two professions with new interfaces in terms of content and structure. In the occupation of the technical system planner, the essential contents of the "old" fields of heating , air conditioning , sanitary engineering , steel and metal construction technology from the technical draftsman's apprenticeship are combined with a new field of electrical engineering systems . In the profession of the "new" technical product designer (the technical product designer), the essential contents of the fields of mechanical and plant engineering and wood technology from the training occupation of the technical draftsman are connected with the "old occupation" of the technical product designer.

Professional profile of the technical draftsman

  • Preparation of model recordings and sketches
  • Creation of standard-compliant manufacturing drawings of components and assemblies in front view, top view, side view, bottom view, rear view, isometric view and perspectives as well as plans
  • Execution of calculations and evaluations
  • Use of information technologies such as CAD, networks, Internet, intranet, databases
  • Project-oriented work based on knowledge of project and quality management
  • Creation of relevant documentation
  • Archiving and backing up drawings and related documents

Development of the occupational profile in recent history

Due to the technical development in the last 30 years, the job description has changed significantly. Drawing on the drawing board has almost completely been replaced by computer-aided design (CAD). This shifted the demands placed on draftsmen from manual skills to theoretical knowledge. On the one hand, extensive and complex databases are usually created and linked using CAD, the structure of which should be understood by the technical draftsman. On the other hand, especially the virtual modeling in 3D , which is already standard in some disciplines, cannot be carried out without a deep understanding of the structural framework.
