Felix Neureuther (born March 26, 1984 in Munich - Pasing ) is a former German ski racer from Garmisch-Partenkirchen . The son of Rosi Mittermaier and Christian Neureuther and brother of Ameli Neureuther specialized in the disciplines of slalom and giant slalom . At world championships he won five medals, three in slalom and two in team competition. As a civil servant in the federal customs administration , he was a member of the customs ski team .

Athletic career

Adolescent years

When Neureuther was two and a half years old, he first went on skis under the supervision of his father. At the age of three, he won his first race at the SC Partenkirchen children's ski club championships. After numerous other successes in children's races, he was German youth champion seven times. During this time he regularly met Bastian Schweinsteiger , who even beat him several times in races.

He drove his first FIS races at the beginning of 2000. This year he also took part in the German championships for both juniors and seniors for the first time. At the 2001 Junior World Championships in Verbier , he finished ninth when Stefan Kogler won the slalom. In 2003 he was awarded the Bavarian Sports Prize in the category of outstanding young athletes , after finishing 15th and 35th in the slalom and giant slalom at the World Championships in St. Moritz and winning his first title at the German championships.

On January 4, 2003 Neureuther celebrated his World Cup debut in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora , where he was eliminated in the first run. For the first time he was in the slalom of the 2003 World Cup at a major event; He was able to work his way up from rank 29 to rank 15 with the fastest time in the second round. He got his first World Cup points in the slalom of Madonna di Campiglio on December 15 of the same year, in which he finished eighth. In the spring of 2004 he graduated from high school. In the following summer of 2004, he was diagnosed with pericardial inflammation , which is why he had to take a forced break. At the beginning of December 2004 Neureuther returned to skiing and reached sixth place in the first slalom of the 2004/05 World Cup season in Beaver Creek . At the World Ski Championships in Bormio in 2005 , he won the gold and thus his first World Championship medal with the German team in the team competition, which was held for the first time . In the slalom he was nineteenth.

Successes in the World Cup, defeats at major events

At the beginning of the 2006/07 season he reached his first World Cup podium with third place in the slalom of Beaver Creek and thus qualified for the 2007 World Championship . In January 2007 he finished fifth and sixth in the two slaloms in Kitzbühel . At the World Ski Championships in Åre he was second in the slalom after the first round, but was eliminated in the decision. He had to end the season prematurely - after his fall in the slalom of Kranjska Gora on March 4, 2007; he had to undergo surgery because of a shoulder dislocation he suffered .

In the first two World Cup races of the 2008/09 season in which he took part, a giant slalom in Sölden and a slalom in Levi , he could not qualify for the second run. He contested his next races in the European Cup on the Reiteralm in Austria, but could not achieve any top positions here either. A little later, however, he won two FIS races in Mutters in front of Manfred Pranger and Mattias Hargin . At the next technical competitions in Alta Badia , he was eliminated from both races in the first run.

On January 2, 2009, he won the first parallel slalom held in Moscow . The show competition, during which an artificial runway was built in the city, was intended to serve as a promotional event for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi . At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , he narrowly missed a medal in fourth in the slalom. In the giant slalom he was nineteenth. In the 2009/10 World Cup season , Felix Neureuther celebrated his first two World Cup victories: on January 24, 2010, he won the slalom on the Ganslernhang in Kitzbühel and at the World Cup final on March 13, 2010, he won the slalom on the Gudiberg in his hometown of Garmisch-Partenkirchen . Neureuther finished the season in fifth place in the slalom discipline. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he surprisingly reached eighth place in the giant slalom. In the race of his favorite discipline, slalom, in which he started as one of the favorites for a medal, he was eliminated in the first round.

At the 2011 World Championships in his hometown, Neureuther was eliminated in slalom, while he only finished 34th in giant slalom. However, a week after the World Cup, he achieved his first World Cup podium of the 2010/11 season when he surprisingly came second in the super combination of Bansko on February 26, 2011 , with only a hundredth of a second missing from winner Christof Innerhofer . At the World Cup final in Lenzerheide , he was third in the slalom for a second time on the podium. In addition, on March 20, 2011, he won the Nations Cup in the German team, ahead of Italy and Austria. In the 2011/12 World Cup winter , Neureuther was second three times and third once, but he did not manage to win. He had the best chance to do so at the World Cup final in Schladming , when he was leading after the first run but was then intercepted by André Myhrer . Neureuther achieved his third World Cup victory on January 1, 2013 at the City Event in Munich , where he beat the Austrian Marcel Hirscher in the final . He achieved his first podium in a World Cup giant slalom on January 12, 2013 with third place in Adelboden . On January 20, he also won the Wengen slalom . At the 2013 World Cup in Schladming, Neureuther was able to win his second World Cup medal with bronze, again in the team competition. In the final slalom race, he finished second, winning his first individual medal at a world championship. As already two years before and again at the end of the season in Lenzerheide , on March 15, 2013, he won the team competition in the German team against Sweden and Italy, which is only part of the Nations Cup.

Establishment among the world's best

The preparation for the 2013/14 season was not optimal. In June 2013 he had an ankle surgery to remove a ganglion . Healing was difficult, which is why he missed a large part of the summer training. He was only able to train fully again in September. Although he suffered a torn capsule on his right thumb in a training fall in mid-December, he won the slalom in Bormio on January 6, 2014 and was equal to his father in terms of the number of World Cup victories. Five days later, he also won the Adelboden giant slalom. It was the first Giant Slalom World Cup victory by a German since March 2, 1973, when Max Rieger won on Mont Sainte-Anne . On the way to the Winter Olympics , Neureuther had a car accident caused by black ice on the motorway and suffered whiplash and bruised ribs. Nevertheless, he could start in the games. In the giant slalom, he finished eighth, while in the slalom - in seventh place with a small gap to a medal position - he was eliminated in the second round. Neureuther expressed his intention to participate again in the next 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , when he was almost 34 years old.

Neureuther at the World Cup Slalom in Zagreb 2015

Neureuther had to cancel the first giant slalom of the 2014/15 World Cup due to persistent back problems. Nevertheless, the season was just as successful for him as the previous one. Among other things, he celebrated his tenth World Cup victory in the Madonna di Campiglio slalom on December 22, 2014, overtaking Markus Wasmeier as the best German ski racer in these statistics . In addition, from January 2014 to January 2015, Neureuther always achieved a podium in all nine World Cup runs. At the 2015 World Championships in Vail / Beaver Creek , he narrowly missed a medal in fourth place in the giant slalom. In the final slalom race he secured his second individual World Championship medal with bronze. After that he had to struggle with back pain again and as a result was only once on the podium as second in the giant slalom in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Neureuther had led in the Slalom World Cup for most of the season; As in the previous winter, he lost the small crystal ball for victory in this discipline to his long-term rival Marcel Hirscher , who overtook him with a win in the last race of the season.

Neureuther then had to take a month-long ski break due to his back problems, which is why he even considered an early retirement. Despite his considerable deficit in training, he made a strong start to the 2015/16 season and finished the first four giant slaloms in the top ten, including one on the podium with second place in Val-d'Isère. He was also on the podium in third place at the first slalom of the season. After that, Neureuther struggled with falling performance for several weeks and only found his way back to his old strength in the night slalom in Schladming . There he fell out of the decision as the leader after the first round, but had a clear interim best time shortly before the finish. He finally confirmed his rising form almost three weeks later when he won the next slalom in Naeba , Japan .

In the 2016/17 season Neureuther achieved 14 top ten results in the World Cup. He was on the podium six times, including three times in second place: in the slalom on January 6, 2017 in Zagreb behind Manfred Mölgg and once each in the giant slalom and once in the slalom in the final in Aspen (behind Marcel Hirscher and André Myhrer ). At the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz , he won the bronze medal in slalom behind the Austrians Marcel Hirscher and Manuel Feller , after only finishing 10th after the first run.

On November 12, 2017 he achieved his 13th World Cup victory with the slalom in Levi. On November 25, 2017, he tore a cruciate ligament while training. He was operated on in mid-December 2017 and had to cancel his participation in the 2018 Winter Olympics .

In the 2018/19 season , Neureuther's comeback was only prevented because of the cancellation of the World Cup start and then because of a broken metacarpal bone on his right thumb. Finally, on December 8, 2018, he returned to the ski circuit with a 21st place in the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère ( France ). He ended his career on March 17, 2019.

Others

Since September 11, 2015, Neureuther has been a member of the jury of Superkids - The world's greatest little talents on Sat.1 . In August 2016 he was a member of the jury for Superpets - The Most Talented Animals in the World at the same station .

The hit Weiterziehn , published on April 1, 2019 with the accompanying video , with which Neureuther announced the beginning of a singing career, turned out to be an April Fool's joke by the Antenne Bayern radio station , which produced the title. The song became a hit anyway and reached number 2 on the German I-Tunes charts. The sales proceeds went to the Neureuther and Antenne Bayern foundations.

In the animated film Playmobil: The Film , Neureuther synchronized the voices of a Russian scientist and an Eskimo.
