Richard first took part in FIS races in December 1994 . Appearances in the European Cup followed from January 1998. Although he started a World Cup race in Val-d'Isère for the first time on December 17, 2000 , he never managed to achieve a countable result for a long time. In 2005 he was unable to contest a single race due to an injury.
It was not until the 2007/08 season that he made his breakthrough to the top of the world. As the 24th of the giant slalom in Beaver Creek on December 2nd, 2007 he got the first World Cup points, on March 8th, 2008 he made it into the top ten in Kranjska Gora . He achieved his first podium on March 14, 2008 at the World Cup final in Bormio , when he surprisingly finished third in the giant slalom. In the same season he reached third place in the giant slalom discipline with a victory in the European Cup.
In the 2008/09 season , a fifth place remained his only top 10 result in the World Cup, while in winter 2009/10 he again achieved third place in the giant slalom in Alta Badia and was among the top ten three more times. In December 2009 he won the Alpine Rockfest, which was held for the first time and not related to the World Cup . The Frenchman remained unsuccessful at the 2009 World Cup in Val-d'Isère and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . Both times he could not finish the giant slalom.
On January 8, 2011 Richard celebrated his first World Cup victory in the giant slalom in Adelboden , where he was as fast as Aksel Lund Svindal . Before that, he had already been on the podium once in the 2010/11 season as second in the giant slalom in Alta Badia. At the Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he won the team competition with the French team , and he was also runner-up in the giant slalom world championship. In the 2011/12 season Richard remained without a World Cup podium. His best result of the season was a fifth place in the giant slalom in Adelboden.
In the 2012/13 season Richard didn't get past eleventh place, the following winter an eighth place was his best result. In mid-February 2014, he fell at the European Cup giant slalom in Borovets , for which he had competed in preparation for the Olympic Games, and tore his left knee with a cruciate ligament .
After the 2015/16 season , Richard announced the end of his career.
