The Alpine Rockfest ( English pronunciation), also World Alpine Rockfest , was an annual promotion event for alpine skiing in Trentino that combined an international invitation race with a rock concert. The Rockfest took place between 2009 and 2013 when there was enough snow in the municipality of Andalo on the Paganella mountain .

concept

The Rockfest first took place on December 22nd, 2009 and from then on it was always held just before Christmas . During the four editions (2009, 2011-2013) it was the world's most highly endowed ski race. With prize money of up to 75,000 euros , even the prestigious Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbühel were surpassed. However, due to a lack of snow, the event had to be canceled four times (2010, 2014–2016).

The inventor and co-organizer of the Alpine Rockfest was Phil McNichol, who had coached the USA 's men's World Cup team until 2008 . The American argued his intentions with the often discussed and, in his opinion, necessary attractiveness of alpine ski racing:

“The Rockfest is about entertainment, taking ski racing forward as professional sports entertainment. We better get cool, we better get sexy and show that it is extreme or we are not going to compete in the business world of sport. "

“The Rockfest is about entertainment, about promoting ski races as professional sports entertainment. We should be cool and sexy and show that skiing is extreme, or we will no longer be able to assert ourselves in the business world of sport. "

Ski races

The venue for the race was the black Olimpionica 2 slope in the Andalo - Paganella ski area . The race was a sprint - Giant Slalom designed with a length of 400 meters and a run time of approximately 35 seconds. Similar to a city event, duels in the knockout system were driven , but not in parallel , but one after the other. In order to avoid ex-aequo decisions as far as possible, the running time was measured to the nearest thousandth of a second, unlike in the World Cup. In the final round, the fastest five competed against each other. Another special feature was jumping over an Audi Quattro .

The Italian radio Rai and Eurosport broadcast live on television. In contrast to other international ski races, the prize money was not divided between the participants, but only paid out for first place. It is an invitation race in which only athletes from the Alpine Ski World Cup take part. The most prominent participants included Massimiliano Blardone , Fritz Dopfer , Carlo Janka , Ted Ligety , Bode Miller , Cyprien Richard , Philipp Schörghofer , Davide Simoncelli and Aksel Lund Svindal .
