biography
Dopfer was born the son of a trained ski instructor. He is a citizen of Austria and Germany because his father is German and his mother is Austrian. He first spent his childhood in Schongau, Bavaria . When he was ten years old, his parents moved with him to Tyrol , where he developed into a talented young skier. Dopfer attended the ski school in Stams , which he graduated with the Matura in 2007. He was accepted into the B-team of the Austrian Ski Association and competed in six races in the European Cup . In his youth class II he was Austrian junior champion in slalom in 2006 and in giant slalom in 2007. At the 2007 Junior World Championships in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee , he finished seventh in slalom and giant slalom, and fifth in the combination .
Change to the German Ski Association
In spring 2007, Dopfer switched to the German Ski Association . With this step, he promised better development opportunities. At the start of the 2007/08 season , Dopfer made his World Cup debut in the giant slalom in Sölden , but failed to qualify for the finals with rank 51. In January 2008, with second place in the giant slalom in Hinterstoder, the first podium in the European Cup followed. In March 2009 Dopfer became German champion in slalom and a year later in giant slalom. In the 2010/11 season he reached third place with three second places in the giant slalom ranking and fourth place in the overall European Cup ranking. On January 30, 2010, he finished 17th in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora , winning World Cup points for the first time. The best World Cup result in the following 2010/11 season was a twelfth place in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora.
At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , his first major event, he was the best German, 15th in giant slalom and 21st in slalom. At the season finale in Lenzerheide on March 20, 2011, he won the team competition in the German team ahead of Italy and Austria, which is only part of the Nations Cup . At the end of the 2010/11 season he became German slalom champion for the second time. On December 4, 2011, Dopfer achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup when he finished third in the giant slalom in Beaver Creek . It was the first World Cup podium for a German ski racer in this discipline since Tobias Barnerssoi on January 8, 1994. Dopfer also came third five weeks later at the Lauberhorn Slalom in Wengen . In the 2011/12 season he was among the top 10 in the slalom and giant slalom World Cup and among the top 20 in the overall World Cup for the first time.
On January 12, 2013, he finished second in the giant slalom in Adelboden and landed on the podium again. At the 2013 World Cup in Schladming , Dopfer was able to win his first World Cup medal with bronze in the team competition. At the season finale on March 15, 2013 in Lenzerheide in the German team, he again won the team competition (which was only part of the Nations Cup) ahead of Sweden and Italy . In the following year he qualified for the first time to take part in the Olympic Winter Games with several top 10 results in the World Cup . At the competitions in Rosa Chutor he reached fourth place in the slalom, just five hundredths of a second behind bronze medalist Henrik Kristoffersen . Two weeks later he finished second behind Felix Neureuther in the Kranjska Gora World Cup . It was Dopfer's only podium finish in the 2013/14 season and the first German double victory in the Alpine men's world cup history.
Slalom silver medal at the world championship
The 2014/15 season has been the most successful for Dopfer so far. Before the 2015 World Ski Championships in Vail / Beaver Creek , he was never worse than tenth in all technical races (13 slaloms and giant slaloms) and achieved three second places. He had the best chance of his first World Cup victory on January 11, 2015 in the Adelboden slalom, when he led after the first run, but was then intercepted by Stefano Gross for 0.02 seconds . At the world championship, Dopfer had to forego his participation in the team competition due to back pain and also only ended up in 15th place in the giant slalom. However, in the final slalom race he was runner-up behind Jean-Baptiste Grange and thus secured his first individual World Championship medal. He then managed to finish second in the last giant slalom of the season in Méribel . In the end he finished fourth in the Giant Slalom World Cup; in the overall and slalom world cup he was fifth.
After a mixed first half of the 2015/16 season , Dopfer achieved third place in the slalom classic in Kitzbühel on January 24, 2016 after setting the fastest time in the first round and thus his ninth World Cup podium. In the slalom and giant slalom in Yuzawa Naeba , Dopfer was also at the top of the rankings after the first run, but fell behind and missed further opportunities to win his first World Cup. On November 20, 2016 fritz dopfer suffered in a fall in training in the Zillertal a tibia and fibula fracture and thus fell for the rest of the race after just two disputed World Cup season 2016/17 and for the World Championships in St. Moritz from.
Dopfer made his international comeback on November 12, 2017 in Levi. He ended up as 15th in midfield. In the slalom of Val-d'Isère he was able to finish seventh again in the top ten in mid-December. He also succeeded in doing this at the City Event in Oslo on January 1, 2018. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he was 22nd in the slalom race and 26th in the giant slalom again after his demands. With the team he finally finished the team competition in fifth place. On March 25, 2018, Dopfer became German slalom champion. In the World Cup, however, Dopfer usually missed qualification or was eliminated in round one.
After he survived the second round without elimination for the first time at the World Cup conclusion in Kranjska Gora , but only ended up in the back field, he won the race in the NorAm Cup at Burke Mountain in the United States . At the Customs Ski World Cup 2019, Dopfer won the gold medal in slalom. Before that, he finished 11th in the giant slalom. Previously, he had missed a medal at the German Championships in Schongau as fourth in the slalom and sixth in the giant slalom.
On March 13, 2020, Dopfer announced his retirement from competitive sports. From September 1, 2020, Dopfer will be a member of the World Cup Organizing Committee in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
