Marcel Mathis (born December 24, 1991 ) is a former Austrian ski racer whose strongest discipline was the giant slalom . In 2013 he became world champion in the team competition .
biography
Mathis comes from Hohenems in Vorarlberg . He graduated from the main ski school in Schruns and the sports high school in Dornbirn . After he had won all competitions of the Austrian school championships in his age group in 2006, injuries interrupted his sporting career. In the same year he suffered a fracture of the ankle and an avulsion of the patellar tendon , and in 2007 he suffered fractures of the tibia and fibula . Because of this, he had to take a break for almost two years. From the 2008/09 season Mathis, who was part of the Vorarlberg regional squad at the time, regularly took part in FIS races . After he was accepted into the junior squad of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV), the first start in the European Cup followed in November 2009
Although Mathis initially remained without points in the European Cup, the ÖSV nominated him for the first time for a World Cup race , the giant slalom of Kranjska Gora on January 29, 2010. In this race, however, as the last of the first round, he clearly missed the qualification for the second run. Two days later, he finished eighth in the giant slalom of the 2010 Junior World Championship . At the beginning of the 2010/11 season he was able to score points in the European Cup for the first time, the first top 10 results followed a little later. In the World Cup, however, he remained unsuccessful in his four giant slalom starts this winter. Mathis finished fifth in the giant slalom of the 2011 Junior World Championships . At the Austrian youth championships in 2010 and 2011, he was second in this discipline. In the spring of 2011 he was promoted to the ÖSV's B squad.
Mathis celebrated his first European Cup victory on December 5, 2011 at the giant slalom in Trysil and two weeks later, on December 28, 2011, he won his first World Cup points with 27th place in the giant slalom on the Gran Risa in Alta Badia . After finishing 25th in the giant slalom in Adelboden on January 7, 2012, he reached his first podium in the World Cup on February 18, 2012 in the giant slalom in Bansko , when he surprisingly finished third with the fastest time in the second run. One month later, on March 17, 2012, he again achieved third place in the giant slalom at the finals of the 2011/12 World Cup season in Schladming ; together with Marcel Hirscher and Hannes Reichelt he ensured a purely Austrian podium.
After these results Mathis was accepted into the national team of the ÖSV in spring 2012. His previous successes were mainly due to the fact that he mastered the carving technique perfectly and that the material was ideally suited to him. For the 2012/13 season , the FIS introduced new material regulations with longer and less tapered skis. Mathis struggled to adapt to the new conditions and came close to the top 10 twice. He was part of the Austrian team at the 2013 home world championships in Schladming alongside Marcel Hirscher, Nicole Hosp , Michaela Kirchgasser , Philipp Schörghofer and Carmen Thalmann in team competition . Although he was not used, he nevertheless became world champion with his successful teammates.
In the following two winters, Mathis fell far behind the competition. In the 2014/15 World Cup winter, he was not able to classify himself in the points once. Even in the European Cup he temporarily lost the connection, with a 52nd place as a low point. Only then did he begin to change his driving style, but that took a lot of time. Since the successes also failed to materialize in the winter of 2015/16, the ÖSV removed him from the squad in May 2016. Despite this setback, he continued his career. In the European Cup of the 2016/17 season, he finished third twice, and in March 2017, after more than three years, he again picked up some World Cup points. Due to this development, he was back in the ÖSV squad in winter 2017/18. The track record was again moderate (a third place in the European Cup and a 27th place in the World Cup as the best results), which is why he fell out of the squad again.
Marcel Mathis ended his active career on September 24, 2018 due to a lack of success.
