The Yongpyong Ski Resort ( Korean 용평 리조트 Yongpyeong Resort ) is a winter sports area in South Korea . It is located in Daegwallyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang , Gangwon-do .

Yongpyeong-myeon, a nearby village ( myeon ), has no relation to this resort. Yongpyong, the largest ski and snowboard area in South Korea, opened in 1998. Through the Tongil Group, it is owned by the Unification Church , a new religious movement founded by Sun Myung Moon .

Infrastructure

The winter sports season runs from November to early April. There are 31 slopes named after colors, such as Yellow, Mega Green, Pink or Red, and 15 lifts, including a gondola lift with a length of 3.7 kilometers. The Dragon Plaza is the largest Korean ski lodge. The highest point in the area is the Dragon Zone at 1,458 meters above sea ​​level . In addition to alpine skiing, the resort offers golf in the summer months .

Sporting events

Yongpyong Ski Resort was one of three main venues for the 1999 Asian Winter Games in Gangwon Province. World cup races in slalom and giant slalom took place in four seasons ( 1998 , 2000 , 2003 and 2006 ) . The Alpine World Cup in disabled sports was also a guest. The resort also hosted the 2009 Biathlon World Cup .

At the 2018 Winter Olympics and the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang , the technical alpine skiing competitions were held in Yongpyong, i.e. slalom and giant slalom as well as the first team competition . Yongpyong was already included in the unsuccessful candidacies for the 2010 and 2014 Olympic Winter Games . In the Jeongseon Alpine Center , about 30 minutes away by car , the alpine speed disciplines, i.e. downhill , super-G and alpine combination , were held.

TV Shows

Some scenes from KBS's Winter Sonata (2002) drama series and SBS's That Winter, the Wind Blows (2013) were filmed at the resort. For the latter, a picture story was published for the fashion magazine High Cut with the main actors Jo In-sung and Song Hye-kyo .
