The Jeongseon Alpine Center ( Korean 정선 알파인 경기장 ) is a winter sports area in South Korea . It is located on Gariwang Mountain in Bukpyeong, Jeongseon County, Gangwon-do .

Infrastructure

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , the speed races in Alpine skiing were held in Jeongseon : Downhill , Super-G and Alpine Combined . The finish area offers space for 6000 spectators. The technical disciplines of slalom , giant slalom and the team competition were held at Yongpyong Ski Resort .

The start of the men's descent is at 1,370 meters and the finish at 545 meters. The route designed by Bernhard Russi is 2857 meters long and has four jumps. The height difference of 825 meters is just above the minimum of 800 meters, as determined by the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS). The women's descent is 2388 meters long and has an altitude difference of 748 meters.

criticism

According to the first plans, the men's route should start on a different elevation. Eventually it was merged with the women's run that begins in the lower Ha-bong, which sparked criticism and protests from environmentalists. They are bothered by the felling of old and rare trees, which were planted around 500 years ago at the time of the Joseon Dynasty and which some Koreans call sacred. At that time, ginseng was planted there exclusively for the king. Deforestation in the 20th century spared the area. The construction of the slopes, however, irrevocably damages the ecosystem because not enough new trees can be planted and the soil is permanently scarred by chemicals. According to his own statements, slope architect Russi was particularly concerned about a “magic tree” that appears in a legend and made some changes to preserve it.

FIS World Cup races

The facility opened on January 22nd, 2016, two weeks before the first test event with two men's World Cup races . The downhill run on February 6 was won by Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud . The following day, the Swiss Carlo Janka won the Super-G. The women tested the Olympic race track in early March 2017 with two World Cup races . The Italian Sofia Goggia won both the downhill and the Super-G.
