Roger Woodward

Roger Robert Woodward (born December 20, 1942 in Sydney ) is an Australian pianist , music teacher and composer .

Woodward studied at the University of Sydney with Alexander Sverjensky , a student of Sergei Rachmaninoff , and at the State University of Music (today Fryderyk Chopin University of Music ) in Warsaw with Paderewski student Zbigniew Drzewiecki . In 1970 he made his debut at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Since then he has performed in Australia, the USA and across Europe with orchestras such as the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig , the New York Philharmonic Orchestra , the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra , the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchester de Paris under the direction of Claudio Abbado , Pierre Boulez , Charles Dutoit , Eliahu Inbal , James Judd , Erich Leinsdorf , Lorin Maazel , Charles Mackerras , Kurt Masur , Zubin Mehta , Roger Norrington , Edo de Waart , Paavo Berglund , Witold Rowicki , Georges Tzipine , Georg Tintner , Walter Susskind and other conductors. As a chamber musician he worked a. a. with the Vienna Trio , the Alexander String Quartet , the Arditti String Quartet , the Edinburgh String Quartet and the Tokyo String Quartet , with Frank Zappa , Ivry Gitlis and the Synergy Percussion .

He was one of the founders of the New Music Festivals of London (1972) and Australia (1975), founded and directed the London Music Digest , the Kötschach-Mauthner Musiktage , the Sydney Spring International Festival of New Music and the Joie et Lumiére concert series . As an interpreter of contemporary music, he played world premieres by composers such as Gilbert Amy , Jean Barraqué , Luciano Berio , Pierre Boulez , Anne Boyd , Sylvano Bussotti , John Cage , James Dillon , Franco Donatoni , Morton Feldman , Rolf Gehlhaar , Peter Michael Hamel , Askell Masson , Richard Meale , Olivier Messiaen , Hans Otte , Arvo Pärt , Horațiu Rădulescu , Larry Sitsky , Karlheinz Stockhausen , Toru Takemitsu , Xu Xiao-song and Iannis Xenakis . His more than one hundred recordings include works by Johann Sebastian Bach , Ludwig van Beethoven , Johannes Brahms , Frédéric Chopin , Claude Debussy , Dmitri Schostakowitsch , Hans Otte , Peter Michael Hamel and others.

He worked with Iannis Xenakis and Pierre Boulez for documentaries for the BBC , and other documentaries were made with Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage and Arvo Pärt. Woodward has served as a juror in various international competitions and teaches at San Francisco State University . Own compositions a. a. for the Festival d'Automne in Paris. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (1993), the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2005), the Order of the British Empire (1980) and the Order of Australia awarded (1992) and the Australian National Trust for lifelong National Treasure appointed (2005).
