Gilbert Amy (born August 29, 1936 in Paris ) is a French composer and conductor .

biography

Amy studied at the Conservatoire de Paris from 1954 , where he was a student of Simone Plé-Caussade , Henriette Puig-Roget , Darius Milhaud and Olivier Messiaen and studied piano with Yvonne Loriod . In 1957 he met Pierre Boulez , who commissioned him to compose a piece for the Orchester du Domaine Musical . The Mouvements were premiered in 1958 in Darmstadt by the ensemble specializing in contemporary music .

From 1958 to 1961 Amy was a student of Karlheinz Stockhausen at the Darmstadt Summer Courses . The following year he began his career as a conductor with an engagement at the Parisian Theater Odéon . In 1967 he succeeded Pierre Boulez as director of the Domaine Musical concert series , which he directed until its end in 1973. In addition, he conducted the great French symphony orchestras and the BBC Symphony Orchestra , the Hamburg Radio Orchestra , the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Orchester de la Suisse Romande .

In 1976 Amy founded the Nouvel orchester philharmonique de Radio-France , which he directed until 1981 . Since 1982 he has taught music analysis at Yale University , and since 1984 he has been director of the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique in Lyon . In 1999, his opera Le Premier Cercle was premiered at the Opéra National de Lyon .
