Serge Nigg

Serge Nigg (born June 6, 1924 in Paris ; † November 12, 2008 there ) was a French composer .

Life

From 1941 onwards, Serge Nigg studied harmony with Olivier Messiaen and counterpoint with Simone Plé-Caussade at the Paris Conservatory . In 1945 he met René Leibowitz , who introduced him to dodecaphony . After a concerto for piano and winds and one for piano and strings (both 1943) and the symphonic poem Timour , his Variations pour piano et 10 instruments from 1946 were the first strictly dodecaphonically composed work by a French composer. It was premiered at the Festival International de Musique dodécaphonique , which Leibowitz organized in 1947.

In 1956 Nigg, who occasionally composed film scores, became a member of the French Radio Music Committee . From 1967 to 1982 he was a member of the Music Directorate of the French Ministry of Culture , after which he took over a class for instrumentation and orchestration at the Conservatory and became President of the Société Nationale de Musique . In 1989 he became a member and in 1995 President of the Académie des Beaux-Arts .
