Life

Josef Zenzmaier was born the son of the road construction worker Josef Zenzmaier and his wife Theresia. He began to model and draw at the age of 13, after Rudolf Reinhart , a student of the sculptor Anton Hanak , had suggested it. From 1947 to 1951 he attended the vocational school for wood, stone and metalworking in Hallein ( HTBLA Hallein ).

In 1952 he started his apprenticeship at the Mayr-Melnhof marble works in Salzburg , which he completed in 1954. During this time he attended the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg in 1953 . It was there that he first met Oskar Kokoschka , whose worldview made a deep impression on him.

In 1955, one year after completing his apprenticeship, he worked for Giacomo Manzù in his studio and house in Milan . In the same year he was studying at the Werkkunstschule in Cologne , where he made the acquaintance of the sculptor Gerhard Marcks and where he met his future wife Anneliese Schmidt, whom he married in 1959. In 1957 he stayed again with Manzù in Rome and Milan, where he learned the technique of bronze casting. From 1957 to 1961 Zenzmaier took part in the International Summer Academy in Salzburg as Giacomo Manzu's assistant.

His first son Gregor was born in 1960, Stefan in 1961 and Felix in 1962. In 1962 Zenzmaier assisted Emilio Greco , who succeeded Manzù at the Summer Academy. After studying in Paris in 1963, Zenzmaier began casting bronze in his studio, and his daughter Christiane was born three years later. In 1969 he built his own foundry in Kuchl and founded the association of bronze-casting sculptors .

In 1970 Zenzmaier became chairman of the newly founded Tennengauer Kunstkreis, which has the task of promoting local artists and organizing exhibitions and other cultural events. Four years later he was appointed head of the bronze casting technique class at the Summer Academy and received the Salzburg Art Association's award and honorary award for sculptors . The following year he exhibited his works for the first time, the first solo exhibition followed in 1980.

From 1979 to 1996 he headed the class for bronze casting and sculpture (from clay to bronze) at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg. During this time he received the Salzburg Economy Grand Prize for Sculpture (1982) and the Wiener Festwochen Prize (1983). In 1985 he was given the professional title of professor .

In 1991 his wife Anneliese died.

In 1997 and 1998 Zenzmaier worked with the German lithographer Klaus Wilfert . In 1999 Zenzmaier received the Karl Weiser Prize .
