Tilman Urbach

Tilman Urbach (born May 12, 1961 in Düsseldorf ) is a German writer and director.

Life

Urbach studied German, theater studies and art history in Göttingen, Cologne and Munich. In 1990 he published the volume of materials on the writer Horst Bienek and poems from his estate at Carl Hanser Verlag , Munich. Since then he has worked as a literary, music and art critic for television, radio and various print media ( Bayerischer Rundfunk , Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Jazz thing , Fono Forum , Du-Magazin) and as a filmmaker ( BR Fernsehen , 3sat and arte ) in Munich.

Since then, long documentaries on cultural topics have been created, including those of the designer Konstantin Grcic (BR / Arte), Juli Zeh (BR) and Marieluise Fleißer (BR).

In 2010 Urbach founded his own production company Modofilm and made his first author's film with Verloren , which received the rating of valuable from the German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) and was premiered at the Biberach Film Festival. The second short film Border-Line celebrated its German premiere in 2013 at the Hof International Film Festival . Urbach's documentary about the painter Gotthard Graubner Farb-Raum-Körper was shown a year later at the 48th Hof Film Festival and was released in German cinemas in September 2015.

In 2017, the documentary Josef Urbach - Lost Art was followed by an autobiographical search for traces of his great uncle, the Rhenish expressionist Josef Urbach , which were stolen from Jewish collections under National Socialism and have been lost to this day. The film celebrated its German premiere at the 51st Hof International Film Festival and was released in German cinemas in November 2018.

Urbach's father was the painter and graphic artist Walter Urbach , about whom he made the documentary Poppy Painter .
