Stone - Time - Human (2001), Wittgenstein-Sauerland Forest Sculpture Trail

With his interventions, Nils-Udo would like to sensitize people to nature.

For the Federal Horticultural Show 2005 in Munich, for example, Nils-Udo created an oversized bird's nest with over 2 m bird eggs and up to 18 m long spruce trunks as branches in a specially created earth hollow. The visitor moved on the bottom of the nest on white gravel - which represented the fluff - and thus experienced the 'bird's eye view' from inside the nest.

For his work Stein - Zeit - Mensch (2001) on the Wittgenstein-Sauerland Forest Sculpture Trail , Nils-Udo brought a quartzite monolith weighing about 150 t to the surface and surrounded it with monumental spruce trunks felled by the storm. The monolith appears to the observer as if he needed protection or as a temple shrine.

Most of his work, however, is far less monumental. Nils-Udo arranges what he finds rather sensitively - stones, twigs, leaves, flowers, berries, sand, salt - and transforms them into images, metaphors and symbols of often poetic intensity.

“My job consists of working in nature, with nature, working parallel to nature and above all: working out of it and working for it. That means: my work does not consist in furnishing nature with artifacts, that doesn't work. "

- Nils-Udo (2009)

Perhaps his best-known work is the album cover for Peter Gabriel's album OVO .
