Jean Barraqué

Jean Barraqué (born January 17, 1928 in Puteaux near Paris , † August 17, 1973 in Paris) was a French composer .

Barraqué is an important representative of serial music . The list of works that he himself considered valid and that he was able to complete is very narrow.

  • Sonate pour violon seul (Sonata for violin, 1949)
  • Sonate pour piano (Sonata for piano, 1950–52)
  • Séquence for voice (dramatic soprano), percussion and various instruments (1950–55). Texts by Friedrich Nietzsche. French translation by Henri Albert (1950–1955).
  • Le Temps Restitué for soprano, choir and orchestra based on a text from The Death of Virgil by Hermann Broch , 1956–57, 1967–68 (orchestration)
  • … Au delà du hasard for four instrumental groups and one vocal group (1958–59). Text by Jean Barraqué based on a quote from Hermann Broch
  • Concerto for six instrumental groups and two instruments (vibraphone and clarinet), 1962–68
  • Chant après Chant for six percussionists, vocals and piano. Texts by Jean Barraqué and Hermann Broch (»The Death of Virgil«, 2nd book; French translation by Albert Kohn) (1965–66)

Unrecognized works

  • Musique de scène for 4 clarinets (bass clarinet), 3 saxophones (alto, tenor, baritone saxophone), 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, percussion (3 musicians), xylophone, vibraphone, celesta, bell and piano. Incidental music to eight theatrical miniatures by Jean Thibaudeau. The work also contains two recitations L'aventurier and Le pauvre homme . Music from 1958–59. World premiere by the sirene opera theater , Vienna 2017, under the title Die Reise . This work was expanded by Barraqué and reworked to ... au delà du hasard .

Personal life

Jean Barraqué was in a relationship with the French philosopher Michel Foucault from 1952 to 1956 . Both were part of the Parisian avant-garde. [1]
