Christian Neureuther (born April 28, 1949 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) is a former German ski racer . He specialized in slalom and won six world cup races in this discipline.

biography

Neureuther, the son of a doctor, began studying medicine after graduating from school . However, he gave up this very soon due to the many interruptions from skiing. In 1968, at the age of 18, he made headlines for the first time through sporting success, with fourth place in downhill skiing at the German championships. A year later he won his first of a total of twelve championship titles in the giant slalom . In the slalom he won five times in a row between 1974 and 1978.

In the winter of 1969/70 Neureuther took part in the Ski World Cup for the first time and already achieved his first top ten placement on December 11, 1969 in the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère. As the greatest young hope of the German Ski Association , he was unable to cope with the pressure of having to win in the period that followed. In promising races, he fell more and more often and therefore got his well-known nickname “Sturzreuther”. His first podium result followed on January 30, 1971 at the slalom in Mégève with third place.

After an unsuccessful Olympic season, Neureuther advanced to the top of the world in the winter of 1972/73. In one of the most difficult slaloms in World Cup competition program, the Lauberhorn slalom of Wengen , he went on 14 January 1973 the first World Cup victory. A week later he was on top of the podium again when he won Megève on January 21. At the end of the season he finished fourth in the overall World Cup.
His slalom results in January 1974 were quite good, so the expectations for St. Moritz were accordingly optimistic. But he had been bedridden for a week immediately before the event due to flu, and had injured his forearm (tendon strain) during slalom training three days before the race (February 7); According to the "Süddeutscher Zeitung", "I was in a capsule tear on the right thumb joint, suffered three weeks ago in Morzine (although not in the running) to look for the root of the failure."

Fifth place in the 1976 Olympics was disappointing for him .

The 1979/80 season was quite successful, although he could not win a medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics either. At that time, now 30 years old, he again achieved third place in the slalom World Cup ranking. At the end of this season Neureuther announced his retirement from active sport. However, there was a short comeback when he competed in the slalom in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on January 10, 1981 and finished 6th. He announced his final decision to end his career on January 19, 1981. He refused to obtain a so-called “B license” - a kind of “professional”, as was subsequently the case with Ingemar Stenmark or Hanni Wenzel .

Christian Neureuther was a member of the jury of the television show Dalli Dalli from 1980 to 1984 , where he took the place of Ekkehard Fritsch's successor Georg Lohmeier . As an alpine skiing expert, he has been co-moderator for ARD since the Nagano Winter Olympics .

He has been married to ski racer Rosi Mittermaier since June 7, 1980 . They have two grown children, Ameli and Felix Neureuther .

Christian Neureuther's great-great-grandfather is the painter Ludwig Neureuther . His great-grandfather is the painter Eugen Napoleon Neureuther after his brother Gottfried von Neureuther in Munich Maxvorstadt Neureutherstraße is named.

Neureuther is concerned about the future of skiing in view of the effects of the climate crisis ; so he said: "The development is really dramatic and scary". Where his great-grandfather used to measure the Alps, there is often no more snow to be found today.
