Dalli Dalli (after the German phrase pronto, pronto ; from the Kashubian dali , on, off you; from the Polish dalej further, go, hurry up ') was a popular TV show of the ZDF , moderated by Hans Rosenthal . From May 13, 1971 to September 11, 1986, 153 programs were broadcast. Before that, Rosenthal already had this question game as a small installment within large WDR- Tried out entertainment broadcasts on the radio with the Werner Müller dance orchestra from 1968 to 1970 under the title "The Triple Chance". A first new edition ran from 1995 to 1997 also on ZDF. From 2011 to 2013, the NDR broadcast another new edition of the TV show with 28 episodes. In 2013, the program switched from NDR television to Erste , where it ran for 10 episodes under the title That's great! .
procedure
Eight prominent candidates competed against each other in teams of two. In the first round, two pairs of candidates played against each other. The respective losers then played for third place, the winners from the preliminary round for victory.
The first round consisted of two word games in which the candidates had to take turns giving answers to a question within 15 seconds, and an action game. Typical questions were: “You are looking out of your window. What can you see there? ”Or“ Name all the opera and festival halls you can think of! ”Or“ What do you keep in your bedside table? ”. In the action game, among other things, the candidates had to fill sausages into a sausage casing and then twist off individual sausages, then as many geraniums as possible should be potted or laundry should be hung up; another time a red carpet had to be rolled up or umbrellas had to be opened. Playing time was always one minute. The action games developed by Hans Rosenthal were either played by both candidates within 60 seconds or the candidates took turns after 30 seconds. The tasks were identical in the respective preliminary round and Rosenthal multiplied the points of the three games.
In the last two rounds of the game, 3rd place and the winning team were played out. In the round for third place, the losing teams from the first two rounds competed against each other. The games changed over the years. In the first years of Dalli Dalli there was the Dalli Dalli abc . Here, a point card was first drawn from a rollable construction (between 50 and 100 points). After that, Hans Rosenthal only asked one question, which was the same for both teams. Since the team should start with the higher number of points in order to give the team with the lower number of points more time to think, the letter was drawn after the question with which all answers to the question should begin. The answers given were multiplied by the number of points drawn. Then the team with the lower score also drew a letter to start their answers with. The team with the higher number of points in this round took 3rd place, the losers 4th place. As a special feature of this game, the first drawn letter could be rejected and a new letter drawn if hardly any solutions were to be expected with the letter. The second drawn letter could no longer be deselected. From the end of 1972 three cards with the Dalli-Dalli male were inserted into the construction. If a team should draw this card, the answer letter could be chosen freely.
From mid-1975 (episode 40) there was the third round of the game Dalli-Klick , a slide show in which more and more parts of a slide were revealed. Initially, a fade through was also carried out after an incorrect answer, later the person in question had to stop until the next picture and the opponents received a point. In recent years, Dalli-Klick has been used in the game for 1st place.
In the last round, a short play was performed, which was revised and made incorrect by, among others, Curth Flatow and Horst Pillau . (including Kiss me Kate , Hamlet , The Bird Trader , Im Weisse Rößl , Hello Dolly , Romeo and Juliet ). The candidates had to note the built-in errors in the text, in the decoration or in the costumes and then read them out within 15 seconds. As a rule, the singing guests of the respective Dalli-Dalli broadcast appeared in the play. The ensemble was strengthened by the jury spokesman Ekkehard Fritsch and, if necessary, by other actors in smaller supporting roles. Due to time constraints, the play was canceled in the 1980s.
After the task was set, Rosenthal always gave the starting signal with the exclamation: Dalli, Dalli!
In addition to the prominent players, there were also participating spectators: In the “Questions Lotto”, a room candidate drew six balls with inserted slips of paper with questions on them. If he answered at least three correctly, then quick draftsman Oskar (Hans Bierbrauer) sketched a price.
In the game for two, the candidates were asked four questions by an expert on a field of knowledge (e.g. locomotives, football, dancing, Beatles, etc.). With 300 DM (or 2,100 Schilling) starting credit, a stake had to be determined before each question. Then the next topic was drawn and asked for written applications. Later this game was transformed into the Dalli questionnaire or the Dalli-Dalli scale , the differences: Simpler questions had to be answered as quickly as possible, the maximum win was 2500 DM. There was a special honeycomb with illuminated fields.
The focus was always on having fun and achieving as many points as possible together. Rosenthal always tried to make each of its candidates look good.
"That was great!"
From the 53rd episode, which was broadcast on September 4, 1976, the audience was able to acknowledge a special achievement by candidates at the push of a button. This initially activated one, later several warning lights and a chirping alarm tone, whereupon Rosenthal said: “You think that was ...” The audience shouted “Great!” And there was a special point. After a few episodes, Rosenthal jumped into the air for the "top!" From the 100th episode, the image of the jump in the air was frozen, which was a technical challenge at the time.
music
In addition to games, the show also included musical performances. These were technically emphasized simple productions, mostly just one singer, accompanied by the Jochen Brauer Sextet or the Götz-Wendlandt Combo under the direction of Heinrich Riethmüller . The texts of the performances, mostly performed as chansons, were initially written mostly by Günter Neumann , who also sat on two grand pianos with Heinrich Riethmüller until his death. Later, Curth Flatow, Horst Pillau and other authors also contributed texts to fill the breaks between the shows on the show with songs.
The "Dalli Dalli" title melody was composed by Heinrich Riethmüller.
Good purpose
At the end of the quiz, Brigitte Xander added up all the points earned by the teams and equated them with D-Mark . Since it was a cooperation with ORF, Mady Riehl then announced the amount in schillings . The winning team was finally able to determine which family in need this prize money went to. With further donations, the winnings could be awarded twice later in the show. Hans Rosenthal personally announced the relevant case.
The “Dalli Dalli hilft” campaign launched by Rosenthal has supported families in need through no fault of their own with the equivalent of 1.4 million euros . After Rosenthal's death, the aid operation will be continued by the Hans Rosenthal Foundation .
team
The Dalli-Dalli team included a jury that initially consisted of Ekkehard Fritsch , Brigitte Xander and Mady Riehl . They sat at a special desk and assessed the candidates' performance, deducting in particular terms that were mentioned twice. Ekkehard Fritsch played a comedic role, while Brigitte Xander and Mady Riehl took on the administrative part.
Assistant Monika Sundermann sat at a special desk. She brought the microphone and accompanied all candidates through the show, especially to the action games. She also operated the rate clock.
When Ekkehard Fritsch was unable to take part due to theater engagements, other celebrities took over the jury chairmanship, including Felix Knemöller , the Bavarian writer Georg Lohmeier , Hans Jürgen Diedrich (first November 13, 1976) and later Christian Neureuther (first March 20, 1980).
Mady Riehl was replaced in the 150th edition by Sabine Noethen , who was only able to do three programs, as the series ended shortly afterwards. Christian Neureuthers wife Rosi Mittermaier was also a member of the jury for a while.
The team also included the quick draftsman " Oskar " (bourgeois Hans Bierbrauer ), who made drawings of prominent guests in front of the camera within a few seconds.
Political statements
- The 75th broadcast took place on November 9, 1978. Hans Rosenthal had tried in advance to postpone this broadcast date, which fell on the 40th anniversary of the November pogroms in 1938 , but this was rejected by ZDF. Rosenthal gave in and moderated the show, but wore black clothes. Opera music was played instead of pop songs during the guessing breaks.
- During a broadcast in 1983, Rosenthal appealed to the mayor of Bad Hersfeld to stop an SS comradeship meeting planned there and called for protests. The meeting took place anyway, but was accompanied by counter-demonstrations.
running time
- From May 13, 1971 to September 11, 1986, 153 programs were broadcast. Originally one edition of Dalli Dalli lasted 75 minutes. From the 25th episode, which was broadcast on October 25, 1973, the airtime per episode was extended to 90 minutes.
- The program of December 13, 1973 was too long and was switched off before the end. This incident was addressed in the first episode in 1974 in the greeting by Hans Rosenthal, and the winning team (Michael Holm and Wolfgang Hofer) was invited to the audience again.
- The cancer patient Rosenthal had to undergo gastric surgery. On January 15, 1987 he wanted to perform again, but the doctors forbade him. The program was taken out of the program at short notice. Instead, an episode of What am I? Was broadcast on ORF . Posted. Rosenthal did not live to see the following date, February 26th; The ZDF commemorated his life's work on this slot.
- Between May 10, 2011 and January 3, 2012, episodes from the 1970s with Hans Rosenthal were repeated on Tuesday afternoons on the digital channel ZDFkultur . Some broadcasts followed there again from March 13, 2012, but were finally stopped before the HD version of the station went live at the end of April 2012 and the slight program reform associated with it. The consequences with the legendary "top jump" did not occur anymore. The official reason for the early cancellation was a lack of audience interest.
Mentions
- In 1973 the company Noris-Spiele brought a board game edition by Dalli Dalli with characteristic elements of the program to the market.
- In the sixth episode of the Austrian satire program Cabaret-Cabaret (1972–1974) Maxi Böhm parodied with his ensemble Hans Rosenthal and his Dalli Dalli. Rosenthal himself acted as a "hall candidate" in this parody.
- In the 12th episode of the comedy series Klimbim on June 3, 1975, Dalli-Dalli was parodied with Ivan Rebroff as the presenter, who was accompanied by the original voice of Hans Rosenthal, while Hans Rosenthal made a vocal appearance in the same broadcast with the voice of Ivan Rebroff graduated.
- Another sketch version by Dalli Dalli was shown on the Peter Alexander show “Wir congratulations” (ZDF, December 2, 1982). In a “night edition for shift workers”, Hans Rosenthal, Brigitte Xander, Peter Alexander and Beppo Brem played a game in pajamas, dressing gowns and nightgowns.
-
Hape Kerkeling parodied Dalli Dalli in a TV sketch in which a woman and a man took part in the word game for associations on a certain topic under the motto “smoking pot against bowling”.
- In the first version of the song I was never in New York from 1982, Udo Jürgens sings “The woman called out: Man, where are you staying? / Dalli Dalli is about to start. ”In a more recent recording, Dalli Dalli was won over by Wetten, dass ..? replaced.
- The music group Sportfreunde Stiller published in 2000 to Rosenthal's exclamation "you think that was great," the song peak .
- In an edition of the Harald Schmidt Show on March 18, 2003, Harald Schmidt parodied a version of Dalli Dalli with two people from the audience and employees from his show.
- In 2003, the punk rock band Die Ärzte shot the music video for their single “Things from those” in a detailed replica of the old Dalli-Dalli backdrop.
- A line from the 2009 single Brave New World (based on the album of the same name) by Culcha Candela contains: "The world is going to end, but we're partying, Halli-Galli, / everything is in the bucket but we jump like Dalli Dalli."
- In the Austrian series A real Viennese does not go under , Karli Sackbauer accuses his father Mundl of lack of culture and ignorance about theater, with the words: "... you always switch to 'Dalli Dalli' or something like that at Schas!" (Episode 5: "The visit").
- In various programs, including the now-show , when someone repeated the phrase "xy (the repeated word) has mer twice since'd have to pull off one mer" needed.
- At home games of FK Austria Wien , the court announcer celebrates the goal with “You are of the opinion that was ...” when the home team's goals are scored, while the audience replies with “Great”.
Trivia
- Two days before the live broadcast on October 8, 1977, the actress and invited candidate Sylvia Manas had a fatal accident on her way to the show. The actress and singer Heidi Brühl took over her part in the show .
- The pop singer Rex Gildo took part in the action game on September 6, 1979 with what was then very modern, tight-fitting trousers - unfortunately the seam in his crotch burst on the live show.
- Uwe Nettelbeck transcribed the broadcast on November 6, 1980 in full and printed it in his magazine Die Republik . The text has a length of around 50 pages and was intended as a real satire for German television entertainment.
- In the April 8, 1982 issue, the candidate Ingeborg Wurster passed out in front of the camera without being in the picture. After receiving medical care, she returned to the show as a candidate.
- The actor Helmut Berger took part in the show on September 5, 1985 and verbally derailed several times during the game rounds.
Television review
On July 4, 1980, Walter Jens wrote a television review for Die Zeit under his pseudonym Momos , in which he spoke about the conservative conversation with the words “Anyone who talks like that has certainly not seen“ Dalli-Dalli ”yet, they haven't seen themselves surrendered to an ideal world, in which the Federal Republic of Germany is still called Germany, where one speaks straight and plainly because one has really looked at the mouths of the people, the dear millions of Bildzeitung readers. " “Concluded.

New edition on ZDF 1995 to 1997
From October 2, 1995 to June 28, 1996 and from July 1, 1996 to May 8, 1997, ZDF showed a new edition of the program, moderated by Andreas Türck , from Monday to Friday .
In the half-hour shows, there were correspondingly fewer game rounds and fewer prominent studio guests. The format was discontinued after around 300 episodes.
New edition in the NDR 2011 to 2013
40 years after the first broadcast, the NDR broadcast a total of nine episodes plus a special as a new edition of the rate show from July 23, 2011 to October 1, 2011, which were broadcast on the late Saturday evening. The moderator was Kai Pflaume . In doing so, the focus was largely on old show elements such as the Dalli click game, the Dalli scale or the honeycomb wall as a stage design. The legendary “top” jump was also performed by Kai Pflaume. In contrast to the original, however, audiences, theater sketches with errors and musical presentations were dispensed with. There were also no longer four pairs of candidates, but only two, each consisting of two celebrities. This new edition met with great interest from viewers and thus gave the NDR very good ratings, so that the people in charge of the NDR decided to produce further episodes while the first season was being broadcast with a total of nine episodes.
As a second season, four new editions ran on NDR television from Thursday, December 22, 2011; the fifth episode on May 1, 2012. During 2012, a third season was broadcast. The fourth season started with “Dalli Dalli XXL” on July 6, 2013. In this episode, four pairs of candidates competed: Verona Pooth and Jörg Pilawa ("screen"), Judith Milberg and Axel Milberg ("relationship box"), Philip Simon and Thomas Hermanns ("fun") and Gerit Kling and Anja Kling ("blood ties") ).
In the new edition, too, the points earned are converted into money at the end of the broadcast: 1 point corresponds to 1 euro. The money earned in this way goes to the Hans Rosenthal Foundation at the end of each broadcast , which in turn takes care of innocent people in need.
The jury consisted of Jan Hofer and Vèrena Püschel . In episode 12 Jan Hofer was represented by Christian Neureuther . From episode 15, Sarah Brandner sat next to Hofer.
In the first episode, Gert Rosenthal, the son of Hans Rosenthal , was a guest.
