Torriani was born as the son of a riding and skiing instructor and grew up in St. Moritz and Oberrüti . After school he learned a pastry chef, cook and later a waiter. At the age of 15 he gave private concerts. He later worked as a self-employed innkeeper, including in Basel , and made a name for himself as an author of cookbooks. Between 1978 and 1983 Vico Torriani ran the Bonne Auberge restaurant on Spalenring in Basel.

As only became known in 2017, according to official documents Vico Torriani lived between 1929 and 1933 together with his sister Sonia as a "food child" on a farm in Oberrüti.

Career

Singer

In 1945 he won a talent competition and then trundled across Europe. In 1949 he had his first hit, Silberfäden, in Switzerland . In 1951 the first big success came in Germany with Addio, donna grazia. After that Torriani recorded numerous records with hits in different languages.

In the 1950s and 1960s he appeared in numerous music films, operettas and musicals . He has made guest appearances in many countries, including Iran. In 1964, his record career initially seemed over. In 1966 he sang the song of the ARD television lottery . Our life can be so beautiful, so easy .

In the 1970s he again had great success with folk melodies. His greatest success was La Pastorella in 1976 , a song that has since become one of the evergreens of German popular music. The song has also been recorded by numerous other performers.

TV star

From 1952 he appeared on television. In 1955, Torriani was the first guest star to be guessed in the guessing show What am I? with Robert Lembke . In 1958 he took part in the German preliminary decision for the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson (now: Eurovision Song Contest) .

He got his own shows, first in Switzerland and later in Germany, such as Grüezi, Vico , Hotel Victoria and in 1971 the Vico-Torriani Show , in which numerous guest stars appeared.

Between 1967 and 1970 he was the show master for many episodes in the television program Der goldene Schuß on ZDF . In 1977 Torriani was seen in the Tatort episode Drei Schlingen with Hansjörg Felmy as Commissioner Haferkamp .

Awards and honors

With the hit Capri-Fischer he landed at number one in 1982 on the music show The Most Beautiful Melodies in the World produced by the Second German Television . In 1995 he received the Bambi Lifetime Award together with Caterina Valente and Helmut Zacharias . In the same year he was awarded the Honorary Prix Walo .

On February 24, 2016, the musical Hotel Victoria was premiered in the Hotel Reine Victoria in St. Moritz . It is based on the television series of the same name, which was hosted by Vico Torriani from 1961 to 1968.

family

Torriani's wife Evelyne Torriani-Güntert (born June 17, 1930 - April 28, 2010), with whom he had been married since 1952, came from Basel. The couple had two children, Nicole and Reto.

Torriani died in 1998 at the age of 77. His widow reported that he did not wake up from an afternoon nap, contradicting press reports that he had died of cancer . His urn grave is in the main cemetery in Lugano .
