history
1948 to 1988
The German TV lottery has its roots in the time of the Berlin blockade of 1948. At that time, the so-called cherry bombers of the Allies, and later the three airlines Pan Am , Air France and British European Airways , flew children from isolated West Berlin to West Germany , with them There were a few relaxing weeks in the country under the motto A place in the sun .
From 1956 onwards, this relief effort was supported by the First German Television, with the drawing of lots being broadcast for the first time on April 28 under the motto Holiday Places for Berlin Children in the still young medium of television. This was the hour of birth of the ARD television lottery. Jochen Richert , then press spokesman for the Berlin relief organization, is considered to be her founding father . He also created the slogan for the drawing, “With 5 marks you are there” . Ruprecht Essberger and Volker Starke were also involved in the creation of the television lottery . Under the patronage of Federal President Theodor Heuss , the television lottery, entitled Die Glückskarosse, raised the equivalent of 1.8 million euros for Deutsche Künstlerhilfe in 1959 .
Due to the steadily growing popularity and success of the lottery, the Deutsche Fernsehlotterie GmbH was founded in 1960 , which has been organizing the television lottery on a non-profit basis ever since. After helping children in the beginning, the group of recipients was expanded from 1959 to include sick and elderly people.
In 1961 what was then the largest lottery wheel in the world, the so-called Glückswirbel , was put into operation. With a turnover of around 14 million DM, around 2.8 million participants were counted.
The income of the TV lottery continued to grow. From 1956 to 1966, the television lottery made a total of 153 million DM (78.2 million euros) available to the relief organization in Berlin , the Kuratorium Deutsche Altershilfe and the Deutsche Künstlerhilfe. The millions in proceeds had to be given to social projects according to certain funding guidelines. For this purpose, the foundation under private law, the German Aid Organization, based in Hamburg, was established in 1967 , which is closely related to the television lottery in terms of organization. The Federal President has taken over the patronage of this foundation. The initiators were the NDR as the lead broadcaster of the ARD and the federal association of local authority associations . The foundation serves to distribute the net proceeds of the lottery among all age groups in all regions of Germany.
In the meantime, the ARD television lottery also supports senior and disabled facilities, hospices, curative educational and rehabilitation facilities, social stations as well as social organizations for child and youth welfare, among others, through the German relief organization . m. In addition to ARD, the municipal umbrella organizations, the Senate of Berlin and the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, representatives of the umbrella organizations for independent welfare are also represented on the board of trustees and the board of directors of the German Aid Organization. They all contribute to the decisions to promote social projects and measures.
Twin cities
Since 1971, many German cities have supported the ARD television lottery. The city of Wolfsburg started this . With the motto “A place in the sun”, the cities organized flea markets and celebrity soccer games, as well as holding concerts and street parties. Commemorative medals were minted and sold (e.g. in Bochum and Hanover ).

Since 1989
In 1989, the television lottery under the name Die Goldene Eins was held for the first time all year round. The program was hosted by Max Schautzer , initially until 1996 , and then Ingo Dubinski , a former host from the youth program of GDR television , from 1996 to 2002 . In 1997, the first major event in a new federal state took place in Leipzig.
In January 2003 the name Die Goldene 1 was replaced by the original title ARD television lottery Ein Platz an der Sonne . Showmaster Frank Elstner took on the public role of ambassador for the ARD television lottery and moderated the associated NDR show Simply Millionaire! . In 2006 the ARD television lottery celebrated its 50th anniversary, making it the most traditional television lottery in the world.
In May 2012, the “ARD TV Lottery” was renamed “German TV Lottery” and thus parted with the long-standing slogan “A place in the sun” .
Criticism because of an advertising contract with Monica Lierhaus
From March 2011 the journalist and TV presenter Monica Lierhaus became the TV lottery ambassador. In February 2011, Der Spiegel stated the fee at 450,000 euros, later the salary will increase. This is paid for from the advertising budget of the television lottery. The fee amount was neither confirmed nor denied by the ARD and the lottery. The amount of the alleged fee led to resentment and numerous subscription cancellations. Mario Czipull, spokesman for the television lottery, told the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung that the television lottery has seen a large number of cancellations by subscribers since this advertising contract became known, which is well above the average number of departures. Czipull confirmed that many layoffs are justified with the amounts being discussed in public. In October 2013 it was announced that from January 2014 there will be no more prominent ambassadors.

Songs of the ARD television lottery
The ARD television lottery was initially only held over a period of usually four months. Weekly draws and other events took place between the main draws. Stars like Heidi Kabel , Willy Millowitsch and Freddy Quinn appeared in guest roles. In addition, there were regularly broadcast short commercials in which well-known artists of the time, such as the folk actors Otto Lüthje and Henry Vahl , also took part. The lottery was accompanied annually by a song from the ARD television lottery , which was supposed to represent programs and events. The songs took up the theme of the lottery in the broadest sense. Annual songs were initially available until 1989. Mostly sung by well-known pop singers, some of the titles became great successes for their performers.
The lottery has been held all year round since 1989. The monthly broadcast of the ARD was called the golden one . In this show, directed by presenter Ingo Dubinski (previously Max Schautzer), artists from the entertainment industry appeared in a hit parade. There was therefore no longer a special song from the ARD television lottery. In 1999, 2001 and 2003, however, the song tradition was revived. In 2003, the song was selected from several competition titles by viewers on the ARD television program at a gala event.
