The Schöneberg Boys 'Choir was a German boys' choir from Berlin , named after the Schöneberg district . The choir performed with around 30 boys each. They wore short black pants, black blazers with emblems, white shirts and white knee socks. The repertoire initially included German folk songs , Berlin hits and hits , later also opera choirs and other classical works.

Career

The choir of the Schöneberg Boys' Choir was founded by Gerhard Hellwig on November 12, 1947. Hellwig trained the boys and sang with them first in old people's homes, hospitals and in Berlin squares. Two years after its foundation took the then director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin , Heinz Tietjen , the choir in his home and engaged him in the performance of the opera Tannhauser by Richard Wagner . This was the beginning of over 3,100 opera performances in over 50 different productions in several languages, including from 1954 at the Bayreuth Festival , whose office for artistic organization was headed by Gerhard Hellwig from 1959.

In 1956 the young singers could be heard in the film Hochzeit auf Immenhof and a year later on vacation in Immenhof with songs by Hans-Martin Majewski . In 1958 the choir sang the first song of the ARD television lottery , Little People, Big Trip . Five years later the choir accompanied the singer Bully Buhlan in his song Junge Herzen haben Sehnsucht , the song of the ARD television lottery 1963. The versatile choir, who u. a. recorded an LP with songs from fairytale land with Manuela , and was featured in numerous television events.

In addition to its many appearances and commitments, the choir has also undertaken over 300 concert tours that have taken it to many European countries and overseas, including the world exhibition in Montreal in 1967.

Dissolution of the choir

Gerhard Hellwig died on January 15, 2011. With his death, the Schöneberg Boys' Choir also stopped their work.
