Donald Grobe

Donald Roth Grobe (born December 16, 1929 in Ottawa , USA ; † April 1, 1986 in Berlin ) was an American opera singer ( lyric tenor ).

Life

Grobe made his debut in Chicago in 1952 (Borsa in Rigoletto ). He made his first guest appearance at the Salzburg Festival in 1962. He was a long-time ensemble member at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (1960 to 1986). His career also took him to the Metropolitan Opera , where he performed the Froh in four performances of Rheingold ( Richard Wagner ) (1968/69).

Hans Werner Henze wrote the role of Wilhelm in The Young Lord for Grobe , which he sang in the world premiere. In the German premiere of Benjamin Britten's Death in Venice , Grobe portrayed Aschenbach, in the US premiere of Wagner's Das Liebesverbot he was Luzio.
