Edith Mathis (born February 11, 1938 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss opera singer ( soprano ) and university professor . She is considered one of the most prominent Mozart interpreters of her time.

Life

Edith Mathis studied at the conservatories of Lucerne and Zurich (with Elisabeth Bossart ). She gained her first stage experience in her hometown. There she made her debut in 1957 as the second boy in Mozart's Magic Flute . From 1959 to 1963 the young soprano was a member of the ensemble of the Cologne Opera House for four years , and of the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 1963 . At the same time, Edith Mathis gave guest performances at the Hamburg State Opera , the Glyndebourne Festival and again and again at the Salzburg Festival . Other important stages in her career included: Covent Garden Opera London , Bavarian State Opera Munich , Metropolitan Opera New York , Vienna State Opera , Gran Theater del Liceu Barcelona , Opéra de Paris . Particular highlights of her artistic career were her participation in the world premieres of the operas Der Zerrissene by Gottfried von Eine on September 17, 1964 at the Hamburg State Opera, The Young Lord by Hans Werner Henze on April 7, 1965 at the German Opera House in Berlin and Help, Help, the Globo links of Gian Carlo Menotti on 21 December 1968, the Hamburg State Opera.

Edith Mathis' repertoire ranged from the easy lyrical roles of Mozart (Despina, Cherubino, Susanna, Zerlina) to the youthful subject (Agathe / Der Freischütz , Marschallin / Der Rosenkavalier , Contessa / The Marriage of Figaro ). She sang some of her most important recordings ( DGG , EMI , Philips etc.) under Herbert von Karajan , Karl Böhm and Karl Richter . Both her Ännchen in Freischütz and her Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro are considered to be of scale. Edith Mathis also made a name for herself as an art song and oratorio singer. 1979 Edith Mathis was appointed Bavarian chamber singer . From 1992 to 2006 she was professor for song and oratorio interpretation at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . In 2001 she stepped back from the stage. She leads numerous master classes in Europe, Japan, Korea, Canada and in the USA. One of her students is Diana Damrau .

Edith Mathis was married to the conductor Bernhard Klee for a long time .
