Diana Damrau (born May 31, 1971 in Günzburg ) is a German soprano and Bavarian chamber singer . She is particularly known as a bel canto , Mozart and Strauss interpreter.

Biography and artistic work

Diana Damrau grew up in Günzburg. The Zeffirelli film La traviata with Teresa Stratas made her want to become an opera singer. She was discovered by her music teacher, who passed the high school student on to his wife, the Romanian opera singer Carmen Hanganu , who gave her singing lessons. After graduating from the Dossenberger -Gymnasium Gunzburg Diana Damrau singing studied at the University of Music Würzburg . Since they did not want to separate her from her singing teacher, Carmen Hanganu was taken on as a lecturer. In 1995 Damrau graduated with honors. She also attended the master class with Hanna Ludwig in Salzburg .

Diana Damrau made her stage debut in 1995 as Eliza ( My Fair Lady ) at the Mainfranken Theater in Würzburg . This was followed by permanent engagements at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and the Frankfurt Opera . Games : Gilda ( Rigoletto ) , Oscar ( A Masked Ball ) , Zerbinetta ( Ariadne auf Naxos ) , Olympia ( Hoffmann's stories ) and the Queen of the Night ( The Magic Flute ) . As Queen of the Night she has made guest appearances at the Bavarian State Opera , the Royal Opera House Covent Garden London, the Salzburg Festival , the Vienna State Opera , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the State Opera Unter den Linden and the State Theater Hanover . Diana Damrau's repertoire includes other Mozart roles such as Konstanze ( Die Entführung aus dem Serail ) , Donna Anna ( Don Giovanni ), Susanna and Contessa ( Le nozze di Figaro ) , and bel canto roles such as Lucia di Lammermoor , Elvira in I puritani , Violetta in La traviata , Norina ( Don Pasquale ) , Adina ( L'elisir d'amore ) , Rosina ( Il barbiere di Siviglia ) , as well as Strauss parts such as Sophie ( Der Rosenkavalier ) , Zdenka ( Arabella ) , Aminta ( The silent woman ) and Aithra ( The Egyptian Helena ) . Her repertoire ranges from the French subject to contemporary composers such as Friedrich Cerha and Lorin Maazel . Iain Bell composed the opera A Harlot's Progress for Diana Damrau (libretto: Peter Ackroyd based on the cycle A Harlot's Progress by William Hogarth ), premiered on October 13, 2013 at the Theater an der Wien under the musical direction of Mikko Franck , staged by Jens- Daniel Herzog .

Diana Damrau has been working as a freelancer since 2002. She made her US debut in 2002 with Leonard Slatkin at the Kennedy Center in Washington . She can now be heard frequently at the New York Metropolitan Opera . Her appearance as Europa in Antonio Salieri's opera L'Europa riconosciuta for the reopening of La Scala in Milan in 2004 attracted attention . One of the highlights of her career was the open-air concert with Plácido Domingo on the occasion of the Soccer World Cup in the summer of 2006 in Munich's Olympic Stadium . At the Metropolitan Opera Diana Damrau sang both Queen of the Night and Pamina in a series of performances of The Magic Flute in 2007, the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor in October 2008 , and Marie in La fille du régiment in February 2010 . In the 2011/2012 season she sang Olympia, Antonia and Giulietta as well as Stella in Jacques Offenbach's opera Hoffmann's Tales at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich . In 2013/14 she sang Violetta in La traviata, among others. at La Scala in Milan, in London, Paris, New York and at the Munich Opera Festival. Diana Damrau sings bel canto roles such as Lucia di Lammermoor (Bavarian State Opera 2015), Leila in Bizets Die Perlenfischer (Theater an der Wien 2014) and Massenets Manon (Metropolitan Opera New York 2015). On Tuesday, June 27th and Thursday, June 29th, 2017, she sang Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich . The artist took over the role spontaneously. Plácido Domingo also stepped in at short notice: “The audience rubbed their eyes and pricked up their ears because, unexpectedly and unexpectedly, they were faced with two stars of the opera. Damrau is also active internationally as a song and concert singer. Her concert repertoire includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach , Ludwig van Beethoven , Johannes Brahms , Henri Duparc , Georg Friedrich Händel , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Antonio Salieri , Giacomo Meyerbeer , Samuel Barber , Gabriel Fauré and Alexander von Zemlinsky . She performed with the pianists Stephan Matthias Lademann and Gerold Huber and was accompanied in 2015 by Helmut Deutsch and Julius Drake . She also performs regularly as a lieder singer with the harpist Xavier de Maistre . Damrau could be heard at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg , the Kissinger Sommer , the Salzburg Festival and other festivals.

Several CDs, videos, radio and television appearances on BR, WDR, HR, ORF and the BBC document Damrau's singing career. Together with the Argentine baritone Ivan Paley, Diana Damrau recorded several song CDs at the beginning of her career, for example by Clara Schumann and Robert Schumann as well as Gustav Mahler . She received the Le Timbre de Platine award for her Mozart CD Zaide .

During her studies she got into a serious crisis due to edema on her right vocal cord . After consulting with several doctors, she opted for a slow healing of about one and a half years without surgery.

In May 2010 Diana Damrau married the bass-baritone Nicolas Testé ; in October 2010 she became the mother of a son. On October 7, 2012, their second son Colyn was born.
