This first directorial work by Herzog was invited to the Mülheimer Theatertage . In 1994 he directed Simone Schneider's Die Nationalgaleristen and The night shortly before the woods by Bernard-Marie Koltès .

In the following years, Herzog was a director and permanent director at the Münchner Kammerspiele, and he also made guest appearances at the Thalia Theater Hamburg , the Vienna Burgtheater , the Schauspiel Frankfurt and the Schauspielhaus Zurich ; his production there of David Mamets Oleanna was shown at the Berlin Theatertreffen . From 2000 to 2006 he was acting director at the Nationaltheater Mannheim , where he also staged the Mozart operas Così fan tutte and Die Entführung aus dem Serail as well as Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg .

After the end of his time in Mannheim, Herzog devoted himself primarily to opera directing and staged at the Zurich Opera House, the Mainz State Theater , the Korean National Theater in Seoul, the Nuremberg State Theater , the Days of Early Music Innsbruck, the Hamburg State Opera and again at the Mannheim National Theater. Drama productions were created at the Bavarian State Theater in Munich and the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe .

He took up this position at the beginning of the 2018/19 season as the successor to Peter Theiler .

“Herzog's directorial style is characterized by theatrical playfulness and psychological accuracy that does without platitudes, superficial actualization and politicization. However, Herzog does not shy away from radical solutions when, as in his Don Giovanni production in Dortmund, he banishes the orchestra to the backstage so that the singers can argue directly in front of and in the audience. "

- Richard Lorbeer : WDR 3 Opera Studio Orfeo, April 19, 2015

In Dortmund Jens-Daniel Herzog assembled and developed a playful singing ensemble of high musical quality. The program ranges from pieces from the early baroque to music theater of the 21st century (especially the German premiere of Anna Nicole by Mark-Anthony Turnage , 2013) and lavish musical and operetta productions covering the entire spectrum of music theater. Thanks to the artistic quality and the integration of the opera into an urban context, Jens-Daniel Herzog has regained the opera's reputation both in the city and across the region. On the occasion of the premiere of Herzog's production of Tristan and Isolde , the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation described the Dortmund Opera as “the currently leading opera house in West Germany”. On the 50th anniversary of the opening of the new Dortmund Opera House, Herzog's production of Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier was shown in 2016 . Herzog last staged Verdi's Otello in Dortmund, and at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein he presented his first operetta production with Franz Lehár's Der Graf von Luxemburg .
