Peter Theiler

Peter Theiler (born May 25, 1956 in Basel ) is a Swiss theater director .

Life

Theiler studied history and German literature and worked as an assistant director at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Frankfurt Opera . There, the collaboration with the director Ruth Berghaus influenced him.

Peter Theiler has been married to costume designer Gabriele Heimann since 1984. In the 1987/1988 season he got his first engagement as a director at the Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen . A year later, Theiler moved to the Opéra de Nice as operations director and director .

From 1991 Theiler was director of the French theater festival " Perspectives " in Saarbrücken . At the same time, he took on a teaching position for scenic lessons at the opera studio of the Music Academy of the City of Basel . From 1994 to 1996 he was employed as head director and set designer for the opera at the Mannheim National Theater. He then returned to Switzerland as director of the Biel Solothurn Theater .

From 2001 to 2008 he was general director of the Gelsenkirchener Musiktheater im Revier . Since autumn 2008 he has succeeded Wulf Konold as State Director at the Dreisparten State Theater in Nuremberg . Theiler has been director of the Semperoper since 2018/19 .

Peter Theiler is a regular juror at international singing competitions, a committed member of the German Stage Association and board member of the Chambre Professionnelle des Directions d'Opéra in Paris.

Honors

In 1991 Theiler was appointed " Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et Lettres " by the French minister of culture . With the award of the degree of officer of the same order, he was honored again in autumn 2004 for his cross-border work in the service of French culture.

In July 2012, Peter Theiler was appointed Honorary Consul of Switzerland in Nuremberg by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
