Pieces. Mülheimer Theatertage NRW is a theater festival that takes place every year in May or June in the town hall of Mülheim an der Ruhr .
Structures
Since 1976, seven to eight new pieces have been shown , mostly in the staging of the world premiere , and evaluated by a jury and the audience. The focus of interest is - unique in Germany - not the production, but the play itself. The aim is to promote contemporary German-language drama.
The pieces invited to the competition are selected by a selection committee. Only plays by German-speaking, living authors that have premiered during the current season are admitted.
A jury made up of theater professionals, critics and playwrights awards the Dramatists Prize of the City of Mülheim an der Ruhr, endowed with 15,000 euros . In addition, the audience will award the undoped " Mülheim Theater Days Audience Award ". In addition, since 2010, the Mülheim Children's Play Prize, endowed with 10,000 euros, has been awarded in a separate competition for the best new play for children between 6 and 12 years of age.
Every two years since 1983, as part of the Mülheim Theatertage, the "translator's workshop" has taken place "for professional drama translators who translate from German into their respective mother tongue and who maintain close working relationships with the theaters in their country". At the 17th Translation Workshop 2015, ten foreign theater dramaturges were invited to the working meeting, one person each from Argentina, Taiwan, Serbia, Belarus, India, Ukraine, Poland, Russia, Portugal and Estonia.
Also every two years and at the same time as the translation workshop, the Mülheim Theater Days invite a foreign-language production of a play from the Mülheim competition - if possible last year. This tradition was first established in 1999 with Urs Widmer's play Top Dogs with the guest performance of the “Teatr Lessja Ukrainka” from Kiev.

In 1987, the theater festival “Pieces” received the ITI Prize from the “Center for the Federal Republic of Germany of the International Theater Institute eV” of UNESCO for the concept of “[...] evaluating and promoting German-language drama, promoting authors and creating aesthetic trends in to support contemporary theater literature ideally and materially ”.
