Redesign of the Swiss banknotes

50-franc note of the ninth series

The Swiss National Bank commissioned Manuela Pfrunder to design a new series of Swiss franc banknotes . The new banknotes were originally supposed to go into circulation in 2010, which has been delayed. The first to be presented to the public at a media conference on April 6, 2016, was the new 50 note. It was issued from April 12, 2016. It was voted the most beautiful note of 2016 by the International Banknote Society. The remaining notes are to follow at intervals of six months or a full year by spring 2019.

This was preceded by an ideas competition for a series of banknotes on the subject of “Switzerland open to the world”, in which Manuela Pfrunder was awarded a 2nd prize on November 23, 2005. In the further development of the work submitted by the three award winners, Pfrunder's designs proved to be particularly suitable for implementation. That is why the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank decided on February 23, 2007 to commission Manuela Pfrunder with the further development of her designs until mid-2008.
