Heidi Kabel (1984)

Heidi Bertha Auguste Kabel , married Mahler (born August 27, 1914 in Hamburg ; † June 15, 2010 ibid), was a German folk actress , radio play speaker and singer .

Life

Heidi Kabel with Henry Vahl , Kiel (1968)

Kabel was born in the house of Große Bleichen No. 30 in Hamburg, directly opposite the former seat of the later Ohnsorg Theater . Her father Ernst Kabel was a printer's owner and temporarily chairman of the Verein born Hamburger e. V. His company "Kabel Druck" still exists today, as does his Kabel-Verlag. Her mother Agnes († 1956) was a housewife. Kabel was supposed to be a concert pianist, but she didn't have enough talent. In 1932 she accompanied a friend to an audition at the “Niederdeutsche Bühne Hamburg”, today's Ohnsorg Theater, a theater that performs plays in the Low German language. She was discovered in the process and received her first engagement in the play "Ralves Carstens" from theater founder Richard Ohnsorg . She took acting lessons from the Ohnsorg actors Käte Alving and Hans Langmaack and stayed on stage for over 66 years. Her acting career spanned a total of 75 years.

In 1937 she married her colleague Hans Mahler . The marriage has three children; Daughter Heidi Mahler also became an actress at the Ohnsorg Theater. In 1949, Hans Mahler succeeded Rudolf Beiswanger as director of the Ohnsorg Theater and had a great influence on the roles of Heidi Kabel. Since 1954, Heidi Kabel achieved great fame in German-speaking countries through the television broadcasts of theatrical performances that were mostly missing for television from the Hamburg Ohnsorg Theater.

Like all Ohnsorg actors, she also worked extensively as a radio play speaker for the NWDR Hamburg and later for the NDR . This also included the series Neues aus Waldhagen , which was broadcast in the form of short radio plays between 1955 and 1985 as part of the school radio program.

On New Year's Eve 1998, the now 84-year-old Heidi Kabel said goodbye to the stage with a performance of the play "My honest day" in the Hamburg congress center CCH . In 2003 her health deteriorated. She moved into a senior citizens' residence in Hamburg-Othmarschen . Although Kabel had increasingly withdrawn from the public eye from 2002, she took on a small role alongside her daughter Heidi Mahler in Detlev Buck's film adaptation of Hands Off Mississippi in 2006 at the age of 92 .

Heidi Kabel is also known as a singer. She recorded some records with mostly Hamburg songs. The best known are Hammonia - My Hamburg, I love you , In Hamburg they say goodbye , An de Eck stands'n Jung with a Trudelband , Hamburg is a beautiful town , gossip, I don't do that , The boy from St. Pauli , Little seagull flies to Heligoland and I'm the grandma from the Internet , the latter only being known as an advertising slogan. In the 1990s she also appeared occasionally as a singer and entertainer , for example at the Madame Lothár Theater in Bremen , where she also had one of her last public appearances in June 2002 at a gala show on the occasion of the seventieth theater anniversary.

Heidi Kabel was also known for her special social commitment. In 1992 she collected money in the Port of Hamburg for the problem child campaign and in 1994 turned to the Hamburg Senate with a petition to draw attention to the fate of a Yugoslav family of war refugees threatened with deportation . She supported, among other things, Hamburg homeless projects , the children's home in St. Pauli and the Association of Friends of the Hagenbeck Zoo .

Heidi Kabel died in June 2010 at the age of 95 years old age . The memorial service in the St. Michaelis Church in Hamburg was broadcast on NDR . Heidi Kabel was buried next to her husband in the Nienstedten cemetery in Hamburg. The tombstone bears the Low German inscription “To't Leben hears de Dood” ( German  “Death belongs to life” ).

Heidi-Kabel-Platz street sign

On September 4, 2011, the Heidi-Kabel monument, a life-size bronze figure created by the artist Inka Uzoma, who died in 2016, was inaugurated with a ceremony on Hachmannplatz. At the same time, part of the square in front of the new Ohnsorg Theater venue was renamed Heidi-Kabel-Platz, so that the Ohnsorg-Theater now has the address Heidi-Kabel-Platz 1 . On the occasion of her 100th birthday, the NDR and celebrities like Ina Müller or Hella von Sinnen remembered cables with a 45-minute broadcast on NDR television .
