Walter Scherau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walter Scherau , actually Walter Voscherau (born January 10, 1903 in Hamburg ; † May 12, 1962 ibid), was a German folk actor and radio play speaker , who is best known for his roles at the Hamburg Ohnsorg Theater ; For a time he was manager of the theater. He continued to work in three German feature films and some television productions. Scherau was the brother of Carl Voscherau and the uncle of the later Hamburg mayor Henning Voscherau and his brother Eggert Voscherau . He was seen in at least 16 TV recordings from the Ohnsorg Theater and was one of the audience favorites with Heidi Kabel , Otto Lüthje and Henry Vahl .

Life

Both brothers came to the stage early, Carl took acting lessons from Franz Kreidemann , Walter took singing lessons as a baritone.

Walter played together with his brother as a Volksbühne player in the then very strong theater associations (mostly, but not only, the labor movement): including the Volksspielbühne “Thalia”, the Volksspielbühne “Club Concordia”, the Volksspielbühne “Rideamus” and Richard Ohnsorgs “Niederdeutsche Bühne eV” . The performances began around 1919 and continued until 1944, when all performances had to be stopped as a result of the Allied bombing raids. The pieces were mostly performed in the convent garden (destroyed by bombs), but also in the people's homes of the workers' movement.

Walter Voscherau only adopted the stage name “Scherau” after the Second World War , when both brothers turned full-time to acting. Both initially played in the Ohnsorg Theater, where Walter Scherau soon became its cashier (in the eV) and administrative director (in the theater). The likelihood of confusion stems from this time, which prompted Walter, as the younger brother, to call himself “Scherau” on stage. In 1946/47, Carl was appointed by Willy Maertens to the Hamburg Thalia Theater as the state stage, so that the immediate risk of confusing two brothers in one play was low.

After the death of his wife in 1960, Scherau withdrew more and more. Walter Scherau died of a heart attack in his apartment at the age of 59 . He was buried in his hometown in the Ohlsdorf cemetery.
