action

Seaman Freddy got on board a freighter going to Canada as a stowaway in Genoa . In Hamburg he sees a little boy who secretly sneaks on board. He saves him when cargo is loaded that almost kills him. The captain spots them both and chases them off board. Freddy wants to go to Canada because he inherited land there, but has no money for the crossing. With the boy, who introduces himself as Stefan, he goes to a warehouse where the child has made a small place to stay. Stefan is an orphan boy who ran away from the home. He would love to go to Canada with Freddy.

Stefan receives small change from journalist Katja when he opens the car door for her. In the process, she loses a 50 DM note, which Stefan secretly keeps. Freddy, however, is honest and gives Katja the certificate back. Later, Freddy begs waitress Susi for a ball for 50 pfennings in the pub Uncle Max , which he gives to Stefan. He claims that Katja gave him a ball that he had already eaten in the pub. He brings Stefan into the hiding place and wants to go to organize breakfast for both of them the next morning. So that Stefan knows that he will be back, he lends him his pocket watch, an heirloom.

In the pub, Freddy plays a song that not only gets him some drinks, but also Katja's attention. She remembers the man who gave her back the lost money and is mesmerized by his voice. She would like to make it big. Susi, in turn, promises him some food, but Freddy flees when the police appear in the pub. Susi knows where he and Stefan are and goes to both of them after the shop closes. It reappears the next day and all three go to the fair. Here Freddy is recognized by the sailor Jan, who speaks to him about an incident in Genoa. Freddy claims there was a mix-up, but Jan vows to find him again. Later he appears at Uncle Max , but Susi lies for him. Her friend's name is not Freddy. When she tries to bribe him with money, Jan gives her the money back.

Meanwhile, Freddy has tried to sell his watch. He sees Katja again, who offers to sell the watch for him. Since Freddy and Stefan had to vacate the warehouse and Stefan is staying with Susi, Freddy lets Katja take him to her house. Katja records a demo tape with Freddy's singing. In addition, it is enough for him 800 marks - the sum for the watch sold to a collector. Freddy could use the money to pay for the passage to Canada. He wants to take Susi with him, but she thinks he is having an affair with Katja. Stefan, in turn, is caught by the police and taken back to the orphanage when, as a supposed thief, he tries to take Freddy's watch from the collector. Jan meets Freddy again and tells him that the manhunt for murder - Freddy was involved in a brawl in Genoa in which a man was stabbed - has been dropped. This is confirmed to Freddy at the police station. He's a free man now.

Freddy convinces Susi of his love for her. Katja organized a free crossing to Canada for him through her contacts and Freddy wants to take Susi with him. She convinces him to drive up alone, otherwise he would have no more money to build a new life in Canada. A surprise awaits Freddy on board. Jan secretly fetched Stefan from the children's home and brought him on board in a duffel bag. Stefan will come to Canada as a stowaway and Freddy is happy about it.
