Freddy lives in a small thatched hut in the lagoon district of Salvador and earns a little money doing odd jobs . He often plays in a bar and is given a meal to compensate. One day he catches a thief who has stolen money from a tram conductor, but lets the man go and gives the money back to the conductor. He is supported by a young woman who happened to be nearby with the car and saw everything. They part ways before both can imagine each other. On the way home, Freddy meets the five-year-old girl Janni. She has no parents and lives in a tree on a rich man's estate. Now she has been driven from there and accompanies Freddy home. Freddy feels sorry for her. The next morning Janni makes coffee for him and already calls him "Papi". Freddy, who cannot keep the girl, takes Janni to an orphanage that is attached to a hospital. Here he meets the young woman from the car who introduces herself to him as Anita, the X-ray doctor. She helped build Brasília for a while and has just returned to Salvador.
Because Janni suddenly had a lot of food from Freddy, she got a stomach problem and had to have an operation. In her sleep she speaks of Freddy as her dad and Anita believes Janni is Freddy's daughter, whom he wants to get rid of under an excuse. After the misunderstanding has cleared up and Freddy is concerned about Janni's condition, Anita suggests that he could adopt Janni. To do this, however, he must have a regular income, i.e. have a regular job. When Freddy agrees to be adopted, she gives him a letter of recommendation to the engineer who is building Brasília. In front of the casting office, Freddy meets the thief again who wants to be honest. His name is Miro and he is desperate because no one wants to give him a job. Freddy leaves him his letter of recommendation and in the end both get work as road builders. Freddy soon doesn't feel like doing the hard work anymore, but changes his mind when he realizes that Anita is also working in Brasília again. Over time, he saved money and became a truck driver. He and Miro now regularly transport goods from Brasília to Belém and back. That makes him interesting for the gasoline smuggler Luiz and his partners Nelito and Manoela, with whom Miro once worked and who have long been wanted by the police as a gang. Luiz takes all his money from Freddy under a pretext and gets him to transport a supposed whiskey box from Belém to Brasília. In addition to whiskey, it also contains weapons. Miro and the refined Manoela want to warn Freddy, but fail. The car is searched by the police and Freddy arrested as a smuggler. Anita thinks she was wrong about Freddy.
Miro, who is also arrested, takes the blame and reports Manoela, Luiz and Nelito as the perpetrators. While Manoela is arrested, Luiz and Nelito escape. They rush to the gasoline hiding places and blow them up to cover their tracks. There are two major bush fires. The flames include Anita and her broken down truck with valuable medical equipment. The driver of the truck rushes into town to call the fire department. Luiz and Nelito save themselves from the flames in Anita's truck. When Freddy hears that Anita is in mortal danger, he rushes to her aid with his car and tows the truck away. Luiz and Nelito can be arrested. Freddy is now celebrated as a hero and is allowed to adopt Janni, even if he has not yet received the stolen money from Luiz. Nothing stands in the way of marrying Anita either.

Far is the Way was filmed in Rio de Janeiro , Brasília and São Paulo in Brazil. One can see the Congresso Nacional in Brasília, which had just been completed at the time of shooting. The film structures were designed by Helmut Nentwig and executed by Werner Achmann . Heinz Pehlke was a cameraman, Wolfgang Treu his assistant. Freddy Quinn sings the songs Weit ist der Weg , La Guitarra Brasiliana and La Botella in the film .
Far is the way had its premiere on November 3rd, 1960 in the Gloria-Palast in Stuttgart . In 2007 the film was released on DVD.
criticism
For the film service was Weit der Weg is an “insignificant mixture of stirring piece, crime story and music bug”. “Kitsch from the brand 'Freddy sings the world in order'. Conclusion: One third clenched, two thirds clenched, ”said Cinema , summarizing the film.
