Frank Duval , also Franco Duval, actually: Frank Uwe Patz (born November 22, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German composer , band leader , singer and arranger .

life and work

Frank Duval is the offspring of an old Huguenot and artist family. His father was a painter and an aunt court painter at the royal Prussian court. His grandfather, editor-in-chief of the Berliner Zeitung and factory owner, also developed reform products such as organic malt and biocitin with his brother-in-law .

In 1952, Frank Duval made his debut as a child actor at the Amerikahaus and Kurfürstendamm, including in the play Fips mit der Angel with Harald Juhnke . In 1954 he began to work as an assistant director at the Vaganten stage in Berlin. In 1956 he trained as a state-approved dancer with Tatjana Gsovsky . From 1958 Duval then appeared with his sister Maria as a hit duo. In 1960 they both sang the song of the ARD television lottery I drive with you and you with me . After more than 50 records and several hits, for example I'll put my fate in your hands , the siblings separated in 1962.

The following year Duval was hired as Freddy for the musical My Fair Lady , the greatest musical success of the post-war period. The marriage to stage partner Karin Hübner also fell during this time . Further musical roles follow. Until 1965, Duval was also active as an actor, including in the Heinz Erhardt film, Of course, the drivers . In 1965 the director Heinz-Günter Stamm discovered Duval's talent for composition and engaged him for the radio play Miss Julie . From then on, Bayerischer Rundfunk entrusted him with his major musical productions and commissioned him with the background music for entire series of radio plays, such as B. for the cult series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams ; but also radio plays based on models by Otfried Preußler and Michael Ende are in Duval's catalog of works.

In addition to his work as a songwriter and composer for artists such as Margot Werner , Maria Schell or Klaus Löwitsch , Duval developed his own musical signature with increasing success from the early 1970s. His breakthrough came in 1977 with the film music for the scene of the shooting in the closed season . From then on, Duval composed the music for various television series, including the crime series Derrick , Der Alte and Die Krimistunde , as well as for numerous feature films, including in 1986 for Please let the flowers live with Klausjürgen Wussow , Hans-Christian Blech and Birgit Doll in the leading roles.

He wrote well over 200 titles for the successful crime series Derrick and Der Alte . In 1994 Duval had an appearance as an actor in the Derrick episode The Key . He also composed the music for this episode. His song Give Me Your Love , which was used as the theme melody for the ZDF series Our Most Beautiful Years with Uschi Glas and Elmar Wepper in the leading roles , was also an international chart success . His successful soundtracks for the ratings hits of the television stations became a springboard for Duval into the record market. In 1983 he presented the LP If I Could Fly Away for the first time, an album that he had designed specifically for the record market and that was immediately gilded .

Born in Berlin, he has been living in seclusion since 1985 with his wife Kalina Maloyer, songwriter and painter, on the Canary Island of La Palma . He is still working on new music there and is now also active in other artistic fields. Since 1995, Duval has increasingly occupied himself with computer graphics and the production of art videos and short films, which he produces, shoots, cuts and musically composes entirely independently. The artist couple showed a larger selection of their works for the first time in 2002 in their joint exhibition Magic Moments at the University of Music and Theater in the Hanseatic City of Rostock .

The most recent release in 2001 was the detailed 3-CD box of tracks , which, in addition to many well-known titles, also includes two short films and a completely new CD for which the artist couple Duval & Maloyer had worked together on texts in German.

successes

Duval's melancholy ballads and sound creations for Derrick and Der Alte - broadcast in 94 countries - brought the artist a worldwide fan base. His first German number 1 hit Angel of Mine (from Derrick episode 77 The Murderer a Candle from November 21, 1980, with Horst Frank , Sven-Eric Bechtolf and Sascha Hehn ) sold 750,000 times in Brazil alone. From 1980 to 1986 Duval also had other great hit parades, including a. with face to face , love and death or Give Me Your Love .

Duval also repeatedly reached the European best lists with his independent concept albums, which he has been delivering regularly since 1983. For this he got twice a gold record in Germany.

In the 1970s, Duval also wrote titles for other artists, including Peter Alexander , Bata Illic and Ingrid Kup .

In the 1980s, Duval also composed and arranged a large number of advertising music, including for Porsche , Mercedes and, for five years, a world exclusive for BMW .
