Tony Marshall
Tony Marshall (* 3. February 1938 in Baden-Baden as Herbert Anton Bloeth ) is a German pop singer .
life and work
Tony Marshall was born Herbert Anton Bloeth in 1938; he changed his surname to Hilger before his first child was born. In 1965 he passed his state examination as an opera singer at the Karlsruhe University of Music . He became known in 1971 with the song Schöne Maid, produced by the successful composer Jack White . Actually, he didn't want to sing the song, which is why he had a drink with Chianti before recording . He hoped Jack White would kick him out of the studio. He had initially agreed because his first ambitious record was a flop, but he needed the money for his family. The record, whose melody is originally a traditional from Tahiti (Nau Haka Taranga), was sold more than a million times in the same year.
From then on, Marshall became the "cheer for the nation" and was one of Germany's top entertainers. He toured around the world (including Japan, Africa, North America). In 1976 he won the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest with Der Star ; the song was disqualified shortly afterwards because the Israeli singer Nizza Thobi had sung it publicly beforehand, which violated the competition rules.
In 2003 the Tony-Marshall-Weg in Baden-Baden was named after him. In 2004 Tony Marshall celebrated his 50th anniversary on stage. In 2005 the trained opera singer played the role of Tevje in the musical Anatevka in the Frankfurt Volkstheater , and in 2008 that of Papageno in the Magic Flute . In the same year he was made an honorary citizen of Bora Bora because of his 1978 hit of the same name , after having been awarded the Münchhausen Prize of the city of Bodenwerder in 2007. As it became known in 2012, Marshall suffers from polyneuropathy , which at times leads to symptoms of paralysis in the legs. In March 2012 he had to cancel a concert because of this. Contrary to the popular term “drinker's leg”, excessive alcohol consumption is only one of the many possible causes of polyneuropathy.
On the occasion of his 80th birthday, his birthplace and hometown made him an honorary citizen in early 2018.
With a song sung in Arabic together with the singer Jennah Karthes and a video shot by Eric Dean Hordes , he advertised the Egyptian coffee brand Mom's Choco Cafe in 2020 .
family
In 1962 he married his childhood friend Gabi. He is the father of two sons, Marc Marshall (* 1963) and Pascal (* 1967), and a daughter, Stella (* 1979). Pascal and Marc were already on stage with him when they were children and are now both successful in the music business, Marc also as part of the duo Marshall & Alexander .
With his daughter Stella, who has suffered from infantile cerebral palsy and epilepsy since birth due to a medical malpractice during an amniotic fluid test , Tony Marshall founded the Tony Marshall Foundation , which, among other projects for people with disabilities, aims to create disabled-friendly facilities Assumes housing and workplaces and the construction of facilities for the disabled .
Tony Marshall describes himself as an atheist.
